Giving up on ACC (80 w123)

After trying to tackle the non-op ACC in my 1980 300d I realize that some previous owner has hacked it up. Various vacuum lines are plugged with wire, there is no vacuum source for the control unit, etc. I have 3 goals for heat/air flow. 1.) fan speed 2.) get air out the center vents 3.) temperature control. I am thinking I will be able to set up fan speed relatively easily with a few relays and 2 buttons (High/Low). Where is the blower resistor pack located, aka "the toaster". I have looked all over the inner fender on both sides, under the M/C, under the dash, but cannont seem to find it anywhere. I have seen pictures of it (metal box with holes in it) but have no idea where to look. Any ideas where else to look?
