602 precombustion chamber removal?

Hello all,

My 1993 300D 2.5 has compression leaking past the #1 prechamber. With the bazillion 60x engines I've owned, this is the first to exhibit this problem.

I pulled the injector and put in a new sealing ring before figuring out the air was coming past the prechamber. What seals the chamber in there? Is it simply metal on metal? Any handy tricks for getting it out?

Thanks,
Klaus

There is a seal ring under the prechamber. You need a special two prong socket to remove the collar and a slide hammer to remove the prechamber.

Thanks. I was just out messing with it and mine appears to use a splined socket on the lock collar (after chipping away large chunks of the plastic dirt shield so I could see it). Couldn't find any to rent on the tool page .

My manual doesn't show any kind of seal ring, rather a reamer tool for resurfacing. Ugh, more tools to buy....

Klaus -- did you ever get this remedied? I think I have a similar issue to deal with. Thanks!

There is no seal ring on the prechamber from the factory. It is metal on metal. However, if it has leaked before and has been repaired and the sealing surfaces were messed up, there is a cutting tool to resurface the lands in the head and then there is a shim to put in there for the material taken out (if thats been done).

I have resealed a couple of these by simpley remveing and cleaning up and reinstalling.

Yes the tool u need is a splined socket, and then a adapter to pull the prechamber, u can make one out of a old injector if u have one laying around.

Yeah, got it taken care of. With the prechamber removed I cleaned all the carbon build up off of both surfaces. Reinstalled and haven't had any problems the past year.

Good luck!
Klaus

Thanks! What tools did you use? One for the collar, and one to pull the prechamber? Glad you got it sorted out!

You will need the splined socket for sure. Should be available to rent here on the board. I borrowed from a friend, but if I had one you'd be welcome to it!

The prechamber can be removed with a normal slide hammer as long as you get a bolt, etc that you can thread in there. Doesn't take too much effort as I recall.

Pre chamber

Jaritt-

nice job on hte conversion to veggie.

I saw your post-
There is no seal ring on the prechamber from the factory. It is metal on metal. However, if it has leaked before and has been repaired and the sealing surfaces were messed up, there is a cutting tool to resurface the lands in the head and then there is a shim to put in there for the material taken out (if that's been done).

I am trying to learn more about resurfacing the lands and the shim to compensate for the material removed.
Also I am surprised there isn't a seal ring that goes between the head and the prechamber.

John

If you are not sure which tool to use to remove the Pr-chamber Retainer Ring simply look at it.

If it has two 1/4" slots on the opposite sides you don't need the splined Tool you need the older Tool like for the W123s.

My 1992 300D needs the splined tool.
I am trying to find out if I need a seal ring between the pre-chamber and the head and what the part # is?
