How common are stuck rings ?

How common are stuck rings and what causes that to happen ?

I have seen threads on how to remedy this problem, however nothing on the cause.

Thanks in advance for any help on this

"Granny" driving too.

briandownunda 10-13-2008 11:33 AM

the granny driving angle catches my interest....this vehicle was purchased new & driven by a 70+ year old lady for the first 120k out of the 160k that are on it.....hmmmmm

Granny driving,
extended idling,
un-approved fuels,
oil additives that contain PTFE other non-approved additives.

Good thing I rev mine to the max every now and then, and use diesel, and no oil additives.... :D

it's been said that you can pull the injectors, and soak the pistons in MMO for a week or more, and improvement has been documented.
aside from that, it's pull the head, and the pistons, and clean them...

Cervan 10-13-2008 07:50 PM

before i would pull the head, i would weld that throttle to the floor with some MMO in a aux fuel tank.

i would drive it hard and see if that help. but all the time, not just an italian tuneup. Drive it like you stole it, for awhile.

Just make sure you're happy with the idea of an oil-soaked engine, as it shoots up the dipstick tube.

briandownunda 10-13-2008 08:27 PM

sorry guys, what is "MMO" ? Is that the marvel mystery oil ?

Caused by what? The oil pan is full of, um, oil...adding 1/4 quart by soaking the pistons won't make much of a difference.
