Does a mechanic have the right to say, "I'm not going to put in an a/c unit in your car, because theres something wrong with it."
Yes I've had other people put in a/c units in this car and they have all failed.
I've ruled out black death syndrom and the system has been flushed out properly. The receiver drier, aux fan, belts you name it, it's been replaced.

Yes, a mechanic has the right to say whatever he/she wants. This is America, you cannot "force" your mechanic to work on your car the way you want them to.

If the mechanic is refusing to honor a warrantee that is a different matter than not wanting to do the work. I'm not an expert in consumer law but if you are holding a warrantee that guarantees the compressor then the burden of proof is on the mechanic to prove that 'something' is wrong with your car. In the real world this is not a large enough amount of money for anyone other than you or him to get excited about so if he won't honor the warrantee your only real recourse is to sue him in small claims court and complain to whatever regulatory agencies or industry associations like the ASE that apply to the business.

Did he recharge the old one with 134 rather than R12?

My indy seems convinced that's what causes premature death on replacement compressors.

False diagnosis
 

It was R134a but the picture has changed. There seems to be a pin hole in a hose that let the freon out. Very expensive hose - $400. I'm thinking of wraping it with alum. flashing and then clamp down a hose over that. Refill the R134a nad hope everything else is ok. Bythe time I get around to doing this next spring the warrentee will be up on the A/C for sure.

since the system is already leaked down could you get the AC hose from a scrap yard and do it once? You could flush a seperate hose very thoroughly
