96 E300D Radiator Problems

A few months ago, my wife pulled into a parking spot and went just a little too far, tapping the radiator support on the concrete parking block. This pushed the entire radiator assembly back about 2 inches breaking the fan shroud.

I purchased a new fan shroud & pulled the radiator assembly back to its original position. All was fine until today when my wife went down a rather steep driveway & hit the radiator support again, but this time pushing the radiator into the a/c pulley and poking a hole in it :-(

It seems to me that the radiator support design for the E300D is lacking in a big way....the support is basically made of pot metal and anything coming in contact with it is going to bend it & push the radiator back as well.

Has anyone else encountered a similar problem ? I am wondering if anyone has some ideas/suggestions on how to beef up that support so a little "kiss" in the parking lot won't destroy my new radiator (once I get it).

thanks in advance !

Brian

The W210 diesels bottom easily on steep driveway approaches. Once you know that most people dont do it a second time.

I suggest YOU drive the E300 and MAKE your wife drive the 240D until she becomes acustomed to driving slower.....

Ensure that the front sound-encapsulating panel is in place and not compromised. This supports the core from the bottom.

Can you describe that the "sound-encapsulating panel" looks like ?

Big plastic panel, bolted to the bottom of the bumper and the bottom of the core support. While it might seem that this won't help the situation, it does, but only if properly attached.

OK, this may be contributing in a big way towards my problem as I do not have this panel......when I bought the car several years ago, the engine was essentially destroyed b/c of a thrown rod....oil had drenched the sound panels so they were tossed by the mechanic when the new (good used) engine was installed.

Can anyone tell me where I could pick up these panels ? Are they different for the E300 vs. the E320 ? I am also wondering what kind of hardware is required to install them

Thanks in advance,

Brian

You need the panel, some self tapping screws, and the little metal clips on the bodywork to hold the screws.

I'm surprised you have this problem. The 210 has about the least front overhang of any car I've owned. I'm generally more worried about dragging the arse-end on this car. I drive fairly carefully but I don't go WAY out of my way to keep from dragging as I would in the Corvette. There are a few tricks I've learned in that car to avoid scraping, the most common being to enter and exit ramps on an angle rather than square.

However, this may require a more difficult adjustment to the wife...

Brian,

I believe you want part number 11 in this diagram:

http://detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=210020&M=606%2E912&GA=722%2E438722%2E600&GM=717%2E446&CT=F&cat=45P&SID=52&SGR=045&SGN=02

You may however, want to burrow back through the site and make sure the chassis number is correct since there might be differences in the panels for your car being RHD and such...

Try starting here:

hi Evan, Thanks very much for those links ! It is hard to tell one goes where.....if part #5 is in front of part #11, I wonder if that one is it ? Matt, do you have an opinion on that ?

Part 5 covers the radiator. Part 11 covers the oil sump.

Well... a buddy of mine had a motor mount collapse, and it moved the motor enough to have the fan hit the shroud, breaking the fan, and the shroud, so... my word of warning is... check your motor mounts on your W210... make sure they are not sagging at all.. there isn't much room between good and broken (fans).
