Is a 2 cetane increase worth 8 cents a gallon?

Around where I live, there are two places that I buy diesel from. One is a Mobil station in Connecticut, and one is a Hess station in NY. The Hess station sells 42 cetane diesel at $1.75 a gallon, whereas the Mobil sells 40 cetane diesel at $1.67 a gallon. Is it worth spending the little bit more for the better cetane rating? I use Power Service diesel additive with every tank, and will soon use DFC with every tank once my Power Service stuff runs out.

Alex

If the lower of those two cetane fuels runs okay, there is nothing to gain from buying the higher cetane unless there are other reasons such as if it is cleaner. I've never had any diesel that wouldn't run great and get equal fuel mileage on anything you could pour in it that was a reasonable facsimile of clean, water free diesel fuel.

Good luck,

I find a strange senario happening in that my Volvo D will actually get better mileage with the lesser fuel during the summer. In the winter however, it won't even start with the stuff without filling the entire state with a blue smog. The premier (Amoco) is the only thing which will start it fairly clean during the cold. Looking forward to comparing the MB's this coming winter and their taste for different fuels.

First off, what I know, Diesel #1 is Karosine... Also, there is a Gulf "Dieselect" rated at 45 cetane! Even the guy who pumped it ensured the quality and it was good stuff!

I would buy higher cetane fuel, but thats just me! Put some DFC of gas in the winter, and you have a Top Fuel Diesel Dragster!
