Got me another one!

I haven't gotten my wagon home yet so I can see whats wrong with it, but I did get another MB this weekend. I picked up a '76 300D. It's not much in the looks department, but man does it run great! (92k actual miles) I bought it from the second owner ( A kid) who bought it from the original purchaser. This kid didn't take very good care of the car, it has surface rust quite bad and he managed to wreck the trunk one day when he couldn't get it to open. So I need a trunk lid. He also managed to hit a deer with it (which is why he parked it) So I also need a grill, a hood, and a headlight cover for the passenger side. As well as a fog light lens for the passenger side. I could get by with the hood as is, but I'm thinking it should be replaced, then maybe I will do some body work and paint it. It came with 5 brand new tires ( put on about a month before he hit the deer) all the windows work except for the drivers front. ( I'm trying to find out why the switch isn't getting any current) The sunroof works, it starts up and runs just fine, shifts well too. I will be putting brakes and shocks on pretty soon as well. I just couldn't pass it up for $200 though. Is there a relay that runs the power windows? It is intermittantly working, yesterday it didn't work at all, today it worked fine? The day before it worked long enough to roll the window down , but wouldn't put it back up! I took it all apart and greased it up and replaced it, then I rolled it up with a "remote source". Today, everything was fine. (dang electrical gremlins anyway) Maybe I will be delivering papers in it by next weekend??? Tom

sweet! sounds like you got a good deal. Does the a/c work? sunroof? just curious. Anyway, about your window. My best guess is the switch itself is going bad. I've seen this countless times on my 300SD, mostly with the seat switches and sunroof switch. I have had luck taking the switch apart and cleaning it, although it normally only works that way for a couple months then i get to clean it out again. MB must have used some sort of special lube, anyone know what it is? you could try jumping the switch using aligator clips and see what happens. Hope this helps

Tom:

The junk yards are full of these things, and new fenders, etc are still available, too.

You need a new window switch -- $18.00. I've only seen one bad wire on one of these things (the safety switch on the 220D is another story!)

And do yourself a favor (and save the trunk and floorpans) -- get both windshield gaskets replaced. They run about $70 each and are shot by now, and leaking water everywhere. Just don't let anyone use any kind of sealant on them (most glass places are addicted the the black self-vulcanizing POS sealant). If you do, you will end up with the mess my brother had -- damned windshield leaked from the day of installation, as the gasket didn't have time to mold to the body before the black s....... hardened! Rotted the entire floor pans and trunk out! The gasket needs only to be lubricated with silicon spray and installed. The body lip, however, must be perfectly clean and smooth, no rust or rough spots, or it will leak. Undulations are fine, just no rough spots. Any rust must be fixed and repainted before installation, so you may have to remove windows and do repair work, then have the glass place come and install in your drive.

Good luck! For sheer driving pleasure, I like the 115s the best -- my W124 is wonderful for long trips, but somehow lacks some of the panache of the 220D!

Ryan: try some wheel bearing grease on the switch contacts if you insist on trying to clean them -- if they are open to the air, they corrode when they spark. Swtiches are cheap enough I don't bother to try to fix them anymore, just replace and forget!

Peter

repairs

Howdy all and thanks for the input! I've had the switch for the window out of the console and it wasn't coroded, but I will replace it anyway. What I tried doing was unplugging the switches from the back and "trading" places with the plugs, the drivers window still don't work even with a switch known to work on the other window. So I got out my test probe and sure enough, NO JUICE coming into the drivers window plug anywhere. I have cleaned out the drains too. Next thing I'm going to do is adjust the valves, no idea ho long it's been since the most recent owner wasn't a MB addict, nor a diesel nut I'll hopefully have the brakes and shocks on by this weekend if not before. I don't know when I'll be able to hit a boneyard for the other parts. I heard there is a place up North of GR, around Rockford somewhere....? Maybe GRLOU or Tasma, might know of others near me? Besides U-Wrench- It in Holland. Last time I was over there they didn't have much in the Mercedes dept. Tom

hey fryer.....

Great pickup and even better price! I live in Rockford but am new to the MB owership team (5 months). Let me know if you find some good parts places. Lehman's on 14 mile does some work on imports and this might be the place you're thinking of. I just called them and they have some stuff, but have gotten rid of most of their mercedes. Bummer.

I also have a 76 300D. Similar story and price. Mine is gutted right now awaiting money for paint. E-mail me for any specifics. They are very simple and straight forward. I have had good luck at the salvage for parts and most of the seals etc are redily available. Now that they are 25 yrs old they are officailly a classic.

When I first started looking for a set of stock wheels, I spent part of a day walking around 6 Mile Autoparts at 6 Mile & Walker.

I remember seeing a few MB 116 sedans, don't remember any specifics. 616 784 0330. Seemed like decent folks.

How many sets of steel wheels do you need? I have at least two sets and one set of silver and one set of tan wheel covers.

Have a great day,

GR_Lou, that is the place I was thinking of. I had been told about the yard at 6 mile by Bruce Regis. I just haven't had time to get up there yet. Somewhere along the line the A/C compressor and bracketry has been removed from this car. The radiator is still there, but everything else is gone. I tried to get brake pads yesterday, and ended up with the wrong ones for the rear so I will be trying again today. It pains me to think about "classics" sitting in a bone yard, but what can a guy do about it you know? I've been over to Holland pulling VW parts and while I was there a kid brought in a '78 Diesel Rabbit to sell to the yard. I was too late, they paid him $50 for the car, and I couldn't buy it from them for any price. ( they will NOT sell a complete car) The seller said it had an electrical problem and wouldn't run. I just had to look at it, quickly found the problem and spliced in a piece of wire. The car fired right up and ran fine, however it was toooooo late, as it was destined for the scrap pile. Thanks for all the help, I'll see what I can come up with! Tom

If you get your brake pads from fastLane you will save yourself a lot of heartache. When I bought my 81 SD I didn't know about this site.I bought loaded calipers ftom Kenects and the squeal was so loud people covered their ears when I put on the brakes.NAPA pads proved no better. Then I found this site and posted my problem and then got ATE pads from FastLane (dilivered to my door) and not only dose Goldie stop better but no more Squeal.
