1992 300D oil question

Hi, I was wondering what oil should I pick for my car and what brand of filter is a good choice.
I have been using Valvoline Diesel 15w40 until now and my car is eating about a quart every 1000 miles, so I am wondering should I continue with mineral or should I switch to synthetic like Mobil 1 Delvac.

Thank you.

Sorry

I forgot, my car has 262.000 miles and I got it only a few moths ago.
Thank you

Try the Delvac 1 5W40 (Or Redline,Or Royal Purple)

If you don't like it you can always switch back.

However, Give it a couple of 5K mile oil changes with the Delvac 1 before you
try to make a decision...It may take that long to clean up all the junk the "Dino"
has left in the engine.

Your hydraulic lifters will run much quieter.

If you insist on using synthetic, use a diesel type such as the Delvac 1 mentioned above. There are additives in these oils that are necessary for your diesel. Such additives are not present in normal synthetic oils.

Filter

I'll go with mobil one, although I have not found 5w40, only 15w40 in the stores that I look. The only 5w40 that I found synthetic was Rotella. Any store recommendation? and also any thoughts on the filter, I was thinking at Bosch.

Thank's

I'm surprised nobody has commented on your consumption rate which is high. Very high, IME. We've owned quite a few Benz diesels over the past decades and not a single one, even with high mileage, has consumed any serious amount of oil. At worst, I'd guess my 300SD ate a quart during the 5,000 mle drain interval.

If luck is on your side, you may have rings that are stuck and using one of the powerful detergent oils may give some relief. There are plenty of folks out there that have had success switching over to a higher grade "synthetic" diesel rated oil and have high miles. OTOH, there are folks who have experienced all sorts of new leaks when switching to these oils.

My best recommendation is to run a couple of changes on Rotella's 5W40 oil (hydrocracked synthetic) and see if you gain any improvement. These oils have serious detergency power and will also keep the engine much cleaner than a petro-based product. I'd stay away from the true syn oils (M1 Turbodiesel Truck 5W40 aka Delvac 1) as they have even more cleaning power and it may end up being too aggressive and lead to new problems. Take a small step, see how the car does. It may take several change cycles for you to recognize any improvement.

You can purchase the Shell Rotella 5W40 at Wall'sMart for $20/gallon. I also see this oil at Autozone once in a while. The Mobil product is around $25/gallon, and higher, if you can still find it (Autozone, Advance Auto Parts).

I only use an OE grade filter. I buy 6 or so at a time. I never use filters from the local auto parts store - - way too expensive for my taste.

Leak

Sorry I meant 1 quart every 2000 miles, but I know I have a leak at the oil pan gasket.
I'll try with rottela.

Thank you.

I'm running Rotella T Synthetic. I'm happy with the results.

I'm perfectly happy with Mobil 1 Turbo diesel and Truck, AKA: Mobil Delvac 1.

As others have said, it will not solve your leak problems.

Leak

I'm not worrying about the leak, I'll put in a new oil pan gasket when I change the oil. I was just curious which was better the synthetic or the regular based on other members experience.
I'll go with the synthetic and see what are the differences.

Thank you

Finally

I discovered by big leak. It is the main O ring. I will replace it as soon as the weather gets a little warmer. At least my under body will never suffer from rust.

People doing oil analysis on this oil in the 1.9 VW diesels have found it to be an excellent oil, often able to go beyond 10,000 miles with ease. It was shown to handle soot better then Rotella T. I use it in both my mildly modified TDI and my SDL.

Don't cheap out on oil. On a turbo motor I would never use anything but a synthetic.
