617 Lift Pump rebuild Procedure/ Instructions?
Hello all! I received my parts from Fastlane to rebuild my lift pump. Anything I need to know before I remove the lift pump? Set crank pulley at BTDC or otherwise? The parts, gaskets, seals, and a few springs look basic but was thinking there might be something I need to know in advance. Thanks!

Get a pan to catch about a quart of oil and block off the supply/return fuel lines so you don't drain your fuel tank on the ground.

thanks, the rest pretty basic and self explanatory I assume? That's a lot of oil to catch!

Back out the little nuts evenly incase all the way around the spring in the pump is under tension to help avoid breaing off the pump flanges.
Be careful if you put the Supply Pump in a vice to hold it. The flanges are thin and can break of easily. Aluminum or Copper vice jaw protectors are nice to have in this case. Before you install the rebuilt pump turn the engine by hand to rotate the cam lobe inside of the IP that drives the Fuel Supply Pump to the lowest position. This way you will not have to push against the tension of the Pump spring when you install it and the nuts should go most of the way down by hand.

Oh, is there a mark on the pulley that will naturally orient the cam to it's lowest point?

When removing my lift pump I found that if you loosen the three mounting nuts it is pretty obvious if there is spring pressure pushing the unit out. After that it was simply a matter of bumping the motor until the pump no longer had pressure pushing it out.
As for the rebuild you simply pull both valves out and put in the new valves and springs. My old springs measured between 12.5mm and 13mm and the new springs measured approximately 14mm. There really is no good way to hold it in a vice and I ended up marring the mounting surface and had to dress it with a file to make it flat again. The pump is made out of pretty soft metal so be careful with it. |

Unfortunately because the Crankshaft will rotate twice to one turn of the pump knowing the degrees will only help 50% of the time.
