Replacing Water Pump question

I am planning to replace the leaking water pump on my 1985 300TD w123. Can I get away with just draining the coolant from the radiator plug? Or do I also need to drain from the block (would like to avoid? this if possible as I have read it is not easy to get to) Sorry if this is an obvious question.

Thanks!

Draining the radiator will be sufficient. You still may loose a little coolant but nothing to worry about.
Good luck.

You can just draing the radiator. When you pull the water pump don't pull the water pump housing unless it's leaking as well. You can remove just the pump, which is much easier that dealing with the pump housing as well.

With the W/P off, it would be a good time to change the small hose behind it that is attached to the t-stat housing, IIRC. I need to do this as well.

That hose is one of the overlooked items......

NAPA's hose does not fit......not metric, a tad too loose

Phil has a source for that hose, he will send you about 6" of hose, and you cut to fit......new hose clamps are a wise investment as well.....

If you don't drain the block, you will loose a bunch of coolant......I don't know exactly how much, but I did the pump last year, and remember having coolant all over the place.......

FWIW: I also flushed the entire system, and refilled with MB coolant.....when I did this job......you don't have to use MB's coolant but you should use one of the newer "Global" type coolants that are compatible with MB's alloys.....

I couldn't get the WP free from the housing on my 300TD when I did this - I pulled both the housing and the WP and knocked it loose off the car. I Used to opportunity to replace the green coolant with Zerex, so I drained the block, too.

Good luck! It's kinda a nasty job. The fan is a bear.

The last couple of times I drained the radiator and or block drain plug, I used a poly pan I purchased at Home Depot. It`s 3ft X 2ft X 8in. think it like $4.00 or so. catches almost all the coolant, and not much of a mess.

If I decide to reuse the coolant, I filter it before putting it back in. I have an old coffee filter basket I use, using my wifes panty hose doesn`t go over very well .

"using my wifes panty hose doesn`t go over very well ".

Man sometimes they really don't have a sence of humor do they!!?? Had to buy a new turkey baster because of a little "fluid" removal.

It seems to me the last time I did this I only drained enough to get the level below the water pump. There will still be some anti freeze that spills out when you remove the old one. Clean the little metal tube out good along with the banjo bolts.

So I completed the job in about 3 hours last night, not as bad as I expected. Getting the fan off (and back on) was the biggest pain, that fan shroud really gets in the way. Also I broke one of the bolts holding in the water pump, but the other 4 came out ok and I was able to reuse them. Be sure to use a little finess as they snap pretty easily. At first I couldn't get the water pump free from the housing, but a few taps from a mallet and it broke loose, again a little finess here. I only drained the radiator so I did get some spillage when I removed the water pump, but had a pan underneath that caught most of it... I also spread some cat litter under the car to absorb what spilled, seemed to work pretty well. The other tricky part was making sure the two belts were on and lined up properly on the pulley that is in front of the water pump. Luckliy my brother was helping me as the extra hands came in - handy (sorry couldn't resist). But overall it was not too bad. It was late and dark when I finished, so still need to refill the coolant and check for leaks today. Hopefully I put everything back together right . If anybody has specific questions about the process let me know.

Ahh, I have one!

I spent last Saturday afternoon doing a flush and refill of coolant and since then have been fighting a couple leaks! One that kept giving me grief was my top hose on the radiator. Finally I re-seated it and tightened it securely and seems to be holding.

NOW I'm getting coolant dripping off the leading edge of the oil pan. Can't quite tell for sure but shining a flashlight down around the water pump it does appear to be wet around it. Argh!

My question: does this sound like it is from the water pump? I am planning to take a cloer look at it tomorrow but I'm hoping it's something simpler! Thanks - I'm goin' to bed and I'll check back in the morning..... Z Z Z Z Z Z Z zz zz z

I fought a similar leak for weeks. At first, I thought it was coming from that short section of hose that's been mentioned in this thread. Turns out, it was leaking, but it was also leaking from the lower bolt on the thermostat cover/housing. I jacked the housing up pretty good when I did a bunch of work on the cooling system (long story), so it didn't surprise me. When I found out it was $200 for the new housing/cover, I just put a bead of silicone on the thermostat cover/housing, let it dry overnight, and it's been bone dry since.

If you did not replace that short section of hose, do yourself a favor and do it. It's the biggest pain in the rear to access without removing some stuff...I cursed for days after mine was leaking.

The other place it could be leaking from is where the bypass hose (the short one) meets the block - there is a gasket in there (mine was toast), and it was leaking down on top of my oil pan - it confused the heck out of me for a few hours. Replaced the gasket, no leak.

If it's coming from the water pump, it will probably be coming out of the weep hole. If that's dry, I'd look elsewhere.

One more thing - don't forget to "burp" the system to get the air out. If you just top off and start driving, you might watch your temp gauge soar very quickly (ask me how I know - not a good scenario when you're trying to drive to work in rush hour).

Thanks WhoWhat for the info!

Actually last weekend I did a coolant flush and refill as well as put on the short piece of hose referred to. It is apparent that it is not leaking so I will spend some time under the car today trying to spot some of the other areas you have brought to light. Could be a t-stat housing bolt...as you have mentioned - I didn't torque them as perhaps I should have.

I'll try to keep you posted....

I am chasing a water pump area leak. It doesnt seem to be from the pump itself. I pulled the radiator plug, took the fan off and pulled the shroud. Looking more closely it appears to be the housing the pump attaches to. Perhaps this hose mentioned above is leaking too.

I am trying to find a schematic of these parts to get a better idea what I am dealing with. Any suggestions?

Anyone suggest where I can get the hose and what ever I need to seal the housing?

Thanks.
