There is a fuse on the back of the instrument cluster. It looks like a bulb but it has a red housing. there is a fuse in it.

so do you have to pull the instrument cluster to get to it?

Unless you are a contortionist.
I went to the stealership to get a new fuse. It was $20.00 plus tax
I improvised with a soldering iron and piece of wire instead.

see these

There is also a solid-state relay or "booster" that allows the rheostat in the instrument cluster to control more lights without burning out. This solid-state relay is behind the instrument cluster and controls the lights in the ACC, shift quadrant, etc.

Here is the diagram:

Ignore the colored marks that illustrate a problem I had earlier with a partial lamp failure.

Dont know if this applies to your problem but on my 87 300d it was just the rheostat had a bad connection after exercising it and pulling the cluster to check the strips on the back of it i read can corrode or break... viola they worked again, so im not sure if it was a bad connection with the rheostat or or a grounding problem with the cluster and when i pulled it out got jarred..
The cluster is easy to get out no screws just pulls out (interference fit)hard part is getting you hands in there to unsrew speedo cable so you can see what is going on back there..
Good Luck
