This is amazing - I had no idea these things were available at these prices!

I'm curious about the volvo wagon diesel - I know nothing about those engines / cars - but seems they run like the old benz.

Makes me downright ashamed about what I paid for my '95 - of course, it was running good enough to make the 4 hour drive home when I bought it - and everything but the antenna and cruise worked.

I'm starting to have serious buyers remorse and thinking I should have bought a 123 even though they are older and harder to find in clean condition (I'm in the rust belt).
Seems the amount of information and parts availability is much better for the older engines.

Live and learn.

The transformation this car is going through is impressive. This is perseverance at it's finest.

Great find,
With the glass now in, if you have a de-humidifier and a garage, throw it in the car over the next few nights. That is what I have done in the past, it is amazing the amount of moisture it will suck up.

Hey Tony,

Nice finds! Isn't it fun finding and correcting all the other "repairs" or lack therof that previous owners did...

Evan, boy are you ever right.. I know you can relate.. How's the #6 GP doing these days?

Milner, these are pretty easy to find clean down here. This isn't the first 300D I've stripped down and started over, and I love doing it. I have a bunch of parts coming, some thanks to members here. What a great bunch of people. Not sure on the Volvo yet, I'll get around to that one sooner or later.

DEC 7 Update

Update time once again. Got most of the interior back together. Tightened up the seat nets while I was at it too. Sure has come a long way since I first brought it home. Thanks to board members for parts assist. Here's the latest pics. Still have to reinstall the heater tube, CCU (when the light bulbs come in), figure out the gauge weirdness, get a new radio, and install the hush panels. Looking for a steering wheel to swap with someone that is junking one, or otherwise has one cheap. Mine has what looks like a bite taken out of it. If not, I have a spare around, but the padding is loose.

#6 is great! Now my troubles are centered around the friggin' leaky fuel system. It was working fine and I had to go messing with it by replacing the o-rings...

preventative maintenance can sometimes become an all consuming disease!

I think I'm afflicted with it now! A simple DV seal job has turned into rewiring half the engine compartment, sending off the injectors for inspection / rebuild, replacing the glow plugs, etc, etc, etc...

Colt 45 bottle tops, flavored cigar wrappers, at least 25 Bingo blotters, and moldy peanuts. That was about it. I was hoping to find something interesting, but no go. I'm bummed.

Any winning lines on the bingo cards?

Wow - the car looks great! Check out the thread I just posted -- 78 240D for Free. I may have to touch base with for helpful suggestions...looks like you know what you're doing...

They were sort of nasty, I didn't even look.

Thanks!! I like doing this so much, I think it's getting compulsive to save all Mercedes Diesels!!

Yay,, update time.. Got the offset woodruff key installed, and wanted to check out the glowplugs, since I've never seen them actually work. This is what it's NOT supposed to look like in cylinders 1,2,3 and 5. Cylinder 4 works fine. I no longer believe the light test, to where if your glowplug indicator on the dash is working you may have one gp out. My circuit was working fine, and this is what I was looking at. Replaced all 5 gp's, car fired right up. I'm very happy with the car so far. Can't wait to do a final update.

Finally had a chance to work on it again. Fixed a burnt ground on the cluster, so now the temp gauge functions correctly. Fuel gauge still was fubar, so I took out the sender. The center shaft has something on it that needs to be scraped off, it's on there that badly. Also, there was so much crap in there, I used the one from my 82. After I took that one apart, cleaned it, and replaced the wire for the low fuel light. That works fine now. Tore the heck out of my finger pushing the dash cluster out. Tonight I'm going to paint the needles, and reglue the clear cover in place. Still a ways to go, but it's getting closer.

Update time again. With the warm weather, I got to paint the hood and install. This car is looking much better than it was when I first brought it home. Still a few things left, but the list is shrinking. Enjoy the pics. I am definitely not a body man, but I don't think I totally suck either. Now Deb really wants me to paint the rest of the car..
