OM617 Engine in a Vanagon?
Has anyone successfully mounted a 617 motor in a vanagon? Just curious as I love the 617 motor and vanagons too (without the wasserboxer) Curious, thanks!

I don't think it would fit. Plus the TDI uses the same bellhousing as the stock transmission...

We put a VR6 in a Vanagon Syncro, tight but doable. Looked at putting a diesel in, I had a spare 603 around, but even the (5-cyl) 602 was too long to fit in the hole. You'd probably need a bulge in the back door and bumper to make the 617 fit, plus the increased weight, plus there is no adapter plate available, ...
A TDi will fit, and all adapters are available, plus plenty of power is available from that engine (at least comparable with a healthy-tuned 617). Very expensive to do though, find one that's already been done (one of the Vanagon forums) and for sale and you'll save a couple of thousand.

I doubt it...
The engine compartment is much too short and to low. The vanagons all have boxer engines (flat four) and the only diesel engine available was a modified 1.6 liter from a rabbit (much smaller than a 617) and even this one they had to install in an angle to make it fit. Successful diesel installations were made in South Africa where they built the vanagon until 2005. They used the 2.5 Liter TDi from the (European) version of the Eurovan. Don't ask me how they fit that engine into the vanagon.

Ya, the angle is changed, the oil pan is changed, and the valve cover is changed. FWIW you could get the T3 with a 1.6TD from the factory... but they didn't last long. Running at 100% load and 4500 RPMs just to go 55 wore the engines out quickly.

Probably, but wouldn't it still be too long? It's a 5 cyl. inline and I doubt sideways installation is possible.

Right, laid the TDi down, not the 617.
The other problem I encountered, as mentioned above, was gearing. I hit the rev limiter on the VR6 just above 100 with 15" Mercedes wheels and 15" tires, any diesel would be unhappy with the highway RPMs unless you re-ring the diffs. There is a taller gearing available for the transmission, again it all adds cost. I believe that the 5-cyl gas engine was OE in some eastern markets.
