Bad T-stat?

The T-stat I have was replaced about 12 -16 mo ago. It was purchased from the local MB dealer parts counter. I just replaced my water pump today, used the *old* T-stat then filled the system with ZEREX G05 coolant/distilled water. Part of that procedure was to take the upper hose loose and pour it full - trying to rid it of trapped air.

The "problem": temp gauge needle parks between 80C and the next higher mark (100C?) - somewhat closer to the higher side. The upper hose is *hot* and all the heater related hoses are *hot* BUT the lower radiator hose is very *cool*.

Anything to be concerned about? First thought I had was that the T-stat must be bad?

ARe you sure you got it back in the right way and got all the air out of the system?

It seems as if it worked fine before it should work fine now.....otoh if you got the engine hot it could damage the stat too.

It still could be air in the system.

Good point! I had the front end up on ramps as I was filling through the top hose. Guess it's no guarantee all air escapes then?

I have driven it some this evening and still the temp never got to the 100C mark and the lower hose was very cool and top one pretty hot?

If it is trapped air, will it work its way out on its own?

Loosen the cap about 30 min after shutdown to burp it. Top it off as needed. After 2 or 3 days most of the air will work its way out.
