Oil Filters

Germanfilters on the web sell a four pack of oil fuilters for only slightly more than I paid the dealer for one. Anye experience with this outfit or comments on purchasing oil filtes from sources other than dealers? Thanks.

Many people won't use Wix on MBs, but I have and do.

Actually you have it the other way around. One of the better filters for the 617 is the Baldwin. One of the worst filters for the 603 is the Baldwin.

Other two good filters for the 617 are the Wix full flow and the Fram that is made in Turkey.

As far as the 603 is concerned, OE and OEM filters are fine. i.e. Mann, Hengst.

603s?

Thanks for responses. I did read thru the long merged thread on filters. he consensus was the Baldwin was good for the 617s not the 603s. But the thread died after that. Anyone have more information on filters for the 603s?

I have bought factory filters (Hengst, Bosch, Mann, etc.) from Fastlane and from ********AZ and have had no problems. Local foreign car parts places should also have such things. Dealer is last resort due to high prices.

Have had no experience with "Germanfilters on the web." If they are selling brand-name filters they might be worth a try. If they are selling Chinese knock-offs, I'd pass.

Even at dealer prices, oil filters are not that expensive and are critical to the health of your engine. Better $20 for an occasional oil filter than $8000 for a rebuilt Metric Motor!

AZ******** or Duval in FL for OE in the MBz box

I buy these in bulk and they're cheap, surprisingly so! Don't settle for junk at a high price. Plan ahead!

have you looked inside one of the filters

The long thread on filters showed that most filters, even from the dealers, were filled with gin cotton, sticks, bugs, etc. Worse, only a few had a sack around this "stuff" to make sure it stayed in the filter. They did finally find one that used a proper paper filter and rolled cotton with a sock. So sticking with the dealer or OEM isn't a guarantee of well made filters.
