Source for rebuilt Unimog engine OM352?

I am pretty close to picking up a 416 Unimog. I have a couple of choices that fit my needs. One has substantially more hours logged but is $5000 cheaper. On the off chance the older cheaper one will need an engine at some point, what is the cost? where can they be found? I am sure I could get it rebuilt but it also seems that drop in re-man engines are becomming quite popular. I also know thw OM352 has had many applications so I figured there must be someone rebuilding these things. Does anybody know of a source for a rebuilt, or the approximate cost of undertaking such a task? Thanks, Brent

G,
I cant quote you an exact price but if you truly mean rebuilt to factory specs $3500 is not out of line. If you don't mind sharing the whereabouts of the one you don't buy I'd appreciate it. I am shopping for the same thing. 416 with diesel, highway gears, prefer crewcab and open bed.

Bob, What you describe has unfortuntely become a very popular set-up. The Dokas (crew cab) are pretty hot. Adding highway gears adds more bucks. From what I have seen many of the Dokas were aircraft tugs, a fairly hard life. Dirk at Unimog Wherehaus is bringing these in and totally refurbishing them. The pics on his site show what you and I would probably consider the ultimate. He strips them down and completely refinishes them. He lengthens the frame to accomodate a longer tipper bed along with the crew cab. He adds highway gears, big tires, rear winch, lots of sound deadeners and americanizes some of the consumables. The tab for a fully finished unit is around $40,000! He has 6-7 in the works currently, all sold. So I have resigned myself to a reg cab with a long box tipper. I have found two, I am leaning towards the cheaper one, especially if I could get the engine redone for $3500 or so. I suspect it will be fine for years, just keeping my options open. Brent
