My dad gave me his 87 300D to take to college when I was 21. I always liked the car (he bought it new when I was 5), but I remember thinking at that time that I didn't really want a 16-year-old car with 190,000 miles (oh the horror!) on it, especially since he had just bought my older sister a brand new TDI. Did not take me long to fall in love with the MB ... too much in love, probably. Now it has 247,000, which sounds low to me now, and I wouldn't trade it for a brand new anything (or anything, period).

One thing I've never been afraid of is a "tank," though ... the cars I learned to drive on were: my MB, a Dodge Caravan and ... a 1987 GMC Suburban diesel. THAT was a TANK. Steering was dangerously loose, brakes were questionable and by the time I drove it, it sometimes wouldn't shift past second gear. Now I'm not really afraid to drive anything. A lot of girls I know won't touch anything bigger than a Camry.

I wouldn't exactly call a 300 a "tank". Look at the original sales paperwork. It is actually rated as a compact car - though the "L" may be a mid-sized .

Now a early 70's Imperial, that big Merc sedan, or the larger Caddys, those were tanks!

Apparently the caliper bolts onto a bracket. The Toyota dealer that replaced the brake pads in May 2007 crossthreaded the bolt into the bracket and it took a year and a half and 10,000 miles for it to fall out. The dealer had to order a new bracket for me. Of course they accepted no responsibilty for their error even though they told me the bracket would not accept a new bolt.

My 16 year old daughter had her sights set on a Benz from the start and so it came to pass by the time she got her license we had bought one and now she wouild not consider another car.
Besides the uniqueness factor, which does set her apart from her friends in their SUV's, Japanese beaters, and new from Daddy euro-cruisers, she loves the solidity and security that the car provides and being just shy of 6 feet tall, the size is also a plus for her.

I was invited to ride on a party bus to a wedding reception 2 weeks ago and my mom drove Ol' Turbo. Her daily driver is a new Range Rover HSE, and she was not remotely excited to get behind the wheel.

To my surprise, she actually changed her mind about the car. No longer does she think I'm insane for selling the 2003 X5 in favor of a 23 year old car. Hopefully, she can help convert the rest of my family, so I can shake this "cousin Eddie" image I'm cultivating.

Hi brandlj (John),

Is the mileage accurate? I hear my daily driver (Coda) sobbing out in the garage....she dreams of her outer coat and engine looking as good at the Tank's.

And for everyone who hasn't driven a 300SDL, you have to drive one before you will believe it is a diesel tank.
