The three-hole junction between the exhaust manifold and the trap cat does not have a gasket. It is shown w/o gasket in EPC and mine did not have a gasket when I disassembled it. I suppose it would not hurt to have a gasket at that point but it would have to stand up to the heat.

As has been said, the four-hole junction between the trap cat and the turbo has a sheet-metal gasket with crush rings stamped into it. The sheet metal is perhaps a few tenths of a mm thick.

another bracket?

Nice clean job!

There is another bracket on the bottom of the cat. that takes 2 bolts to a bracket on the block. I would assume that also supports some of the weight of the turbo as well. Not sure if you would need that on your bypass pipe.

When I took mine apart, the 3 bolt flange had sheared off the cat. from vibration I assume. If that happens, the only thing holding the turbo in place (on your pipe)is the support arm going to the "ear", which can pivot when supporting all the weight. Bad things could happen after that.

This is something that I looked at when I built my "test pipe." There are actually braces in 3 places: one where the exhaust manifold attaches to the trap cat (3 bolts), one in the middle of the cat (the one you mentioned) and a double brace at the "outlet" end of the cat where it bolts onto the turbo (4 bolts).

Many '85s have only a single brace at the turbo end; I found the second brace on a car in the local Pick and Pull. At the turbo end, one brace runs down to the block and the second over to the head. I'm not sure if both are necessary but am glad to have them since I have no middle brace.

After comparing the weight of the trap cat to the test pipe (don't remember the numbers at the moment), I decided that the weight reduction was such that the center support could be eliminated.

Nice work. Do you have a test stand to test fit each one after building it?

I am interested to see what kind of mileage increase you get after installing it. It still would not be as efficient as the federal manifold outlet in the middle going straight into the turbo. Then again maybe the difference is not even noticeable.

Lightbulb Trap

Yeh I've sold several of these and everyone has been really happy with them and they all said they felt a noticable difference in power and throttle response. Plus it beats getting one made at a machine shop for $400. Let me know if are seriously interested at Jon@monstercraftsman.net

Looks nice. Who has installed one and what kind of mileage difference did you see?

Nice job on your website Jon.
