In passing gear...engine misses???? 93 300D 2.5L

93 300D Turbo 2.5 L

I was on interstate yesterday and noticed when I pressed the accelerator down the RPM of the engine increases and feels normal and then the engine almost seems as if it is missing. Mind you, the car has no trouble accelerating up to highway speeds. It does not have a noticeable miss at idle. All appears well until the passing gear kicks in.

Could it be one of the following?

Dirty Fuel or fuel Filter?

Clogged Banjo Bolt?

Turbo malfunction?

Alda malfunction?

IP Timing?

Thanks for the help ahead of time.

I can suggest the fuel filters as the place to start, as they are easy to replace and represent routine maintenance anyway. Besides being a very likely cause, their replacement is easy and relatively cheap and you always start with "easy and cheap" once the problem is narrowed down to several possible things.

Also check the fuel tank for vacuum (whoosh) when opening the filler cap.

I'd say the fuel pump comes in next. When you are accelerating, the engine RPMs are higher and a marginal pump can still keep up with the fuel flow. At highway speeds the RPMs are likely lower and a marginal pump might not keep up with higher fuel flows.

Does the missing stop if you let off the accelerator a bit?

Replace both fuel filters as a place to start. Cheap and easy.

If it misses at idle as well, it may be a pump or injector issue. I dont believe it has anything to do with the turbo, alda, or banjo bolt.

No big blasts...just the usual unspent fuel smoke, nothing blue just a hint of shadow smoke

Fuel Starvation

KEN300D has your inexpensive "Rapido" fix!
[Try the Fuel Filter(s) and/or the Fuel sock in the bottom of the Tank.]
[And the Tank Vent](It's possible to have a weak lift pump @ 217K,but not
usual)
