Radiator

My gauge reads about 60C is that normal? Do I need to replace the thermosate? Which one goes in a 1984 300 CD?
Also when doing 55mph my tach is at 2500. So what rear gear does that indicate?
I'm hoping that getting the temps up will increase the mpg.

Thanks

mpg will most likely increase w/ proper operating temp.

change the t-stat. Just went through this issue, big difference.

Yep, replace the t-stat. You have the 3.07 gearing.

Does the gauge flicker/bounce at all? If it does, replace the temperature sender in the head.

Assuming 195/70-14 tires which turn 815 times per mile (per http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html), 55 mph at 2500 rpm means a diff ratio of 3.35:1. 60 mph would mean a 3.07 like ForcedInduction says. You either have some gauge error or a smaller diameter tire like 185/70-14.

More likely its just slippage of the non-locking torque converter.

Automatic 300D's see 3100rpm @ 70mph with a 3.07 diff. Since I have a clutch (no slippage) I see 3200rpm @ 70mph with a 3.46 diff. An automatic with a 3.46 would see significantly higher RPMs.

rrgrassi said he has a 3.07 first, not me.

It has 195/70-14 tires. And it's an automatic. Also I have been passing one of those radar signs and the speedometer marks at the speed indicated.
