What did I do???
Here is what I did......
On my daughter's 1982 240D I removed the instrument cluster repaired the odometer hooked everything back and thought I did a great job. Key word there is "thought". Here is the problem..... There is something wrong with the gauges. The fuel and temp gauge jump all over the place. When you turn on the left or right directional the same gauges jump as the directional clicks on and off. What is wrong??? I've removed and reinstalled the cluster with no success. The problem is still there. HELP!!!!!!!

Make sure the big round plug is securely plugged in, then check your ground wires.

Each gauge is grounded to the one next to it. So make sure you check the circuit boards of the two outside gauges to make sure you didn't burn one of the lines. To check to see if it's a gound issue you can connect a wire from one of the screws on the back of the cluster to the big ground connection behind the cluster. If adding that ground wire solves the issue then you've got a bad ground somewere in the clutster electronics. And as Bryan pointed out make sure the big plug in the back is plugged in all the way.

sounds like an intermittent ground connection

There are also ground wires right behind the cluster, in the dash, you should see it as soon as you remove the cluster out. Brown lines = ground

The large plug is 'clocked', it must be plugged-in in a certain way, there is a semi-circle pin and receiver to insure this happens, sometimes the receiver gets broken and it gets plugged-in one position off... some gauges still appear to work.

there a bunch of ground wires that are grounded on the part of body that holds the steering column via bolts. removing the instrument cluster or dash will give you access to them. there are not too many compared a w201 im working on now which has a parastic battery drain which has over 20 ground wires being grounded to the same place. Woo hoo!
