w124 B-pillar reinstall problem

Greetings forum,

I removed the b-pillar covers from my 1990 300D to have them recovered. Reinstallation is proving tricky. Looking at the Chassis manual, the cover is supposedly held in place by only the top clip and the bottom screws. However, there are black plastic clips under the chafing strip on both sides of the pillar that appear that they could play some role. These clips are about 12 inches from the top of the pillar. How they fit onto the b-pillar cover, if at all, I haven't a clue. The cover goes in place without a problem but it has gaps behind it near the top between the edge and the chafing strips. This makes me think that something is supposed to hold it more tightly to the pillar somewhere in the middle.

Many thanks,
Rich
