If the fuses are good, then they're good?

Unless their corroded or something...those bullet type fuses are prone to corroding. You may wanna try spinning them around in thier little slots to rub off any corrosion between the fuse and the clips the fuse goes into

? (??)

bgkast,

Multi-Function Stalk (Turn Signal)
When you pull it towards you the HIGH Beams come on ["Flash"] as long as you hold it.
When you push it away(From the released position) the High beams stay on.

Intuitive for people who inhabit the Eastern side of the Atlantic.

(I've never understood driving on the Left hand side of the road ,Either.
'And I know the Romans never taught anybody to drive like that)

Fuses are good. They've been ohm'd out replaced. The bulbs have been checked. No lighty with stalk pushed or pulled. No light failed indicator on dash when stalk is pushed or pulled. All other lights combination switch/stalk functions work.

Sorry Brien.. Didn't mean to be curt with you. I don't know the exact fuse at this moment. I've got the owners manual and the fuse panel to tell me.

Combination switch will get swapped out.

my fuses are good as well, replaced them anyways- terminals are good. Funny the new ones didnt go in as well, they are the same size but when I put them in the top tab doesn't come down as far like they were longer....

My highbeams have never worked since I got the car in June. The foglamps used to work when I pull out the switch in the dash and stay on, but now that switch will not stay in the 'out' position- it pulls back immediately so I have no foglamps or high beams. I still need to check the bulbs but it seems odd they would both be dead....

Headlight fuses

BBDC,

Fuses #2,8,13,14,15,16

I also notice the "Exterior Lamp Failure Monitoring Unit"
("N7", In the Relay section of the Fuse/Relay box) controls all headlight functions.

'Noodleheads at Cooper Bussman offer "Fake" fuses.Plastic not Ceramic.
'Some Scheißen Sie Kopf figured since the atc/atm type fuses worked in plastic,
they could get away with making the "Capsule" type fuses in El Plastico TOO.

The danger is, that the Metallic element will heat enough to melt (And possibly
incinerate the Plastic fuse shell) [Or dislodge the fuse from it's clip]the plastic,Before loading enough to Operate [fracture].

FS,
The Master Headlight Switch's inability to remain in the "FogLamp" position,
along with no lights, may be an indicator that it's Vacating.

Have an 81SD and last winter I had to tear apart the headlight assembly on the left side. The hi beam would not work and I traced it over time to the connection there.
There is a small plug in wiring harness between the lead wires to the h/l and the bulb itself. The plug in buss between them is where mine failed. Gets corrosion in there and fails. It is very hard to test as you almost have to take it apart to test it.

And limit your light function control.

So I finally replaced the headlight switch and my foglamps work again, but still no high beams not even flash. I checked the fuses and replaced them. I think my combination switch is ok because turn signals work and it feels like its in proper order. So I guess I'm back to the connectors?

Sorry I'm just not very good with electrical items.....

No High Beams

FS,
Take a look at Sixto's reply #8 above ...he gives instructions on how to "Pin Out" the Combination Switch for continuity.

Check the 14-pin(?) connector from the combination switch below the steering column just ahead of the brake pedal. If I read the diagram correctly, pins 1 and 2 should show continuity with the switch in high beam position and pins 2 and 11 should show continuity in flash position. The high beam indicator in the dash is powered downstream of the fuses but upstream of the relay. If the indicator doesn't light, the problem is likely upstream of the relay. Looks like fuses 15 and 16 are the high beam fuses.

WOW I can't believe its almost a year later I finally get around to investigating this!

To refresh, my high beams do not work, sometimes the lamp indicator on the dash is on sometimes it is not. I have replaced fuses.

I did a continuity check and on pinss 1&2 I get .09 and on 2&11 I get .50

Would this indicate that the problem is with my combination switch and needs replacing? Thanks!

My left high beam kept flickering for awhile and then just went out. Turned out the bulb socket had melted only at the high beam prong. I bought the heavy duty ones at AZ or AA and replaced the left side, works fine now.

The idea to check the voltage at the light bulb prongs is a good one.

Will check it out tomorrow, I replaced one headlight bulb about 6 months ago and didn't notice anything unusual with the plug but I may have not looked close enough. Its odd how the bulb indicator in the dash is on only sometimes.
