300 TD Speedo/Odo repair

My workshop manual doesn't show much on how to repair the speedometer and/or odometer. The odometer stopped about three weeks before the speedometer went out . I have taken out the instrument cluster before and know where the speedometer cable connects, but I don't know how to examine the whole system for troubleshooting. Where does it connect to the transmission? Where should I look first for possible problems? Is this an advanced job for a novice?
Thanks a lot!

Testing with another instrument cluster would be ideal. I tried to fix everything myself, ruining my odometer in the process. Luckily, I had another matching non-functional one that I sent off to a professional. 2 weeks later I got it back.

the speedo is driven off the rear of the transmission housing. If you remove the cluster and have access to the speedo take a small drill bit that just fits snug in the end of the speedo where the cable connected and spin with drill. if speedo reads then you may have a broken cable. Not uncommon. Have seen several. The odo is the pot metal gear that drives the odo unit comes loose on the steel shaft. i have removed this gear, and "nicked" the shaft enough to cause it to grab the gear better. Most work good for several years.
