W210 dash compartment stuck closed

My '96 E300D has a small storage compartment in between the radio and the ashtray. The compartment has a push-push lid but mine is stuck closed. Does anyone know how to get it open without breaking it or spending a bunch of money having the dealer fix it?

I tried searching the forum but couldn't find anything, perhaps because I don't know the correct name for this thing?

Jeremy

I can't specifically tell you how to undo this door, but perhaps this link can offer some guidance....

Good luck!

That did it, thank you. Turns out the plastic mechanism that holds the lid open is lubricated by a light grease that has started to harden with age. The stiffening grease is preventing the lid from latching properly. I should be able to fix it now.

Is it punched in? I thought the door was supposed to be even with the panels above and below it...

Yes, the photo shows it is pushed in. When the door is properly closed, it is even with the ashtray below and the panel above containing ACC and radio. With the stiff grease, it doesn't want to latch closed; one pushes harder and harder until the result in the picture occurs. Once I get the stiff grease replaced with a very light application of new grease it should be OK.
