I looked at some oil coolers online and maybe I will go with a stock radiator and then mount a remote oil cooler in front of it. If it doesn't block the radiator much then it should be fine. I should probably get the biggest practical oil cooler (not bigger than would be efficient). I think I want one that has the inlet and outlet on the same (left) side so I don't have to reach one line clear over. Maybe one of those big square ones from a 300SDL would work as they have the outlets on the same side.

I thought my idea of cutting out the sheet metal from a 220/240D and bolting it to the W111 was clever, though.

I went back to Pull-A-Part to cut out the sheet metal from the W115 220D, but it was gone. There were two new ones there, though; both W115 240Ds with A/C. The radiators/oil coolers were much wider than what was on the W115 220D and I would not be able to make them fit my car.

One good thing that did come of it is I discovered the W115 cars have retractable shoulder belts in the rear seat that attach under the rear windshield. I discovered my fintail has these same mounting holes, so now my car can have front and rear retractable seat belts!

I'm not sure what I will do about throttle linkages yet. I may try to transplant the linkage from a W116 to the firewall or use the original linkage and make it reach over the top of the engine.

i saw in one of the pics of these frankencars that they used the linkage flange bolted to the firewall from a w123 now thats easy enought but i dont see what they did on the bottom to meet up with that..if they just went up at an agle from origianl location on the w108/w111 or if they changed everything below there..well i guess that means your car is still in the making also..so keep me posted with what you decide and if i figure somthing out i will do the same....thx

For what it's worth, the automatic transmission you put in your car is geared very differently than the one with which the car was made. If you had kept the original manual transmission or installed an automatic transmission from a car of the same era, it would be geared properly.

Nonetheless, I still plan to install a disc rear end from a W108. I still plan to continue this project ten years after these posts were made, however, with a twist--the 230S in the pictures I posted was scrapped due to heavy rust and the high availability of others like it.

I actually had a rust-free 230S with a sunroof lined up to purchase, but after ten years the seller still hasn't delivered, so that is not happening, I guess. In the meantime I passed up some decent cars, and now that I am searching hard, not much of any good 230Ss are showing up.

I also acquired a W110 fintail wagon, but it is rusty beyond repair, so it will be used to convert a 230S (when I find one) to a station wagon. I plan to retain the original four speed column shift manual transmission so it will be geared properly, and will at some point install a disc rear end from a W108.

We'd love to have Franz on https://fintail.org/forum !
