Where is the oil pressure sender?

I want to install a better electronic oil pressure gauge than what is in the dash of my car but I don't know there oil pressure sender is on my car. It's a 1983 300D-T. I've been told that the electronic gauge just hooks up to that sender and that it's much better and cleaner than a mechanical one. Thanks for the info!

Alex

As far as I know, Mercedes Benz did not use a sender unit with these models, and an oil line ran directly to the gauge. You can take a look behind the instrument cluster to verify this. I'd imagine that installing an aftermarket oil pressure gauge would be as simple as disconnecting the line from the old gauge, and securing it to the new gauge. Stick the oil line in a bucket once you remove it, so oil doesn't spill everywhere.

300SD's oil sender is at the back of the oil filter housing near the fire wall. I thought 300d has the same engine. if there is a tube, it might be at the same spot(I guess).

Both Speedy and the Good Fellow are correct. The SD's have a sending unit which provides voltage to the electronic gauge in the instrument cluster. The D's have a direct pressure line from the back of the filter housing going to a mechanical gauge. The engines are the same, but filter housings have different part numbers. If Alex wants an electronic gauge, he will have to put an oil filter housing from an SD onto his D. At least that is the only thing I can think of.

Wow, I don't think I want to tamper with my instrument cluster so I guess I'll have to just learn to live with the original pressure gauge. I always wonder though how much oil pressure I'm really getting because the needle really slams against the peg and who knows how much higher it would go if not for its restraint. Anyway, thanks for the info. It's always nice to learn something new.

Alex,

As long as the pressure is up, your engine should be happy. You might be able to get some kind of universal pressure sending unit with a T fitting and splice into the line going to the mechanical pressure gauge. That would be a good DIY project.
