I am thinking pulling the filter and a visual inspection of the filter housing and the old fliter. Install a new the filter and try again.

After that the oil drain and dropping the pan sounds like a good idea to look for evidence in the bottom of the Pan
While the pan is down I would probably pull out the Oil Pressure Rlief Valve in the Oil Pump to see if it possible for it to be stuck closed (have not read of this happening since I have been a member of this forum though).

re-threading oil filter housing ?!

thanks diesel 911. i found the problem. one of the bolts on the filter housing had stripped the housing threads. it came right out, threads full of metal bits. ugh. i have tried wrapping a new, replacement bolt with plumbers tape to no avail. since i can't drive the car, i need any ideas on what to do. i don't have re-threading tools. i wonder if anyone has any modification ideas that will save me having to tow it to a machinist or someone who can re-thread.
also, and i know this will be a dumb question to many: what's the best way to turn/screw the double-sided bolt without damaging the threads on the other end? so far i tried wrapping a small cloth around it and using a pair of dykes. i ask because i also got a replacement bolt that's a little too big, thinking i could maybe force it in to make new grooves.
thanks anyone.

There is no other choice than getting the correct thread tap and retapping the threads for a new bolt! Any cheat to doing this right and you are going to join the destoyed engine club! It could blow off while going down the highway and nowhere to stop. If your not sure of how to do this, get someone to help you or take it to a mechanic and have it done right.

Its not pressed in, its a threaded stud. Perhaps it backed out slowly each time the oil was changed until it was only grabbing by a couple threads...and then popped out.

Our replacement engine we got had something like that happen, a (very good) aluminum welder had re-created the ear on the housing, and they had then used a bolt threaded down into it to fasten the cover. Bad idea though because each insertion and removal placed wear on the aluminum instead of the steel stud. We swapped housings for a good one. (motor was out so it was easy)

Benz Lover had the same problem and fixed it with a Helicoil. It looks like he deleted all his threads here, but if you search on BW, it's still there.

Anything sounds better than pulling that oil filter housing

Didn't someone drill through the bottom and put a standard bolt in it's place/ Or, am I imagining that? (is it already open at the bottom?)

My .02 worth, helicoil type kits are fairly cheap, (there are other brands than helicoil, some don't use a coiled spring but a solid plug), and include the thread insert, tap and installation tool. An insert in aluminum or white metal is stronger than the original thread, and allows the bolt sizes to be kept stock. Last kit I bought, to rethread a plug hole in an aluminum head was about $35, and included 3 or 4 inserts of various lengths, and the direction sheet is fairly detailed.
