Bad Deal?

I bought a 91 300D 2.5 Turbo from the auction for $4200. She is a "Black Beauty", has 102k miles and a Flood Damage title. I did a complete inspection and found the water line was about 6" above the floor.

Today, I did a fluids/filters change and I found no trace of water in engine and tranny. Recharged the battery and it fired right up. Surprisingly, she is very quiet and the engine is running very strong as compare to my SD.

I spent almost 4 hours to bring those 6 power seat motors back to live. Now, both seats are working fine.

Only found out comfort control unit(CCU) and vacuum supply pump(VSP) are drown. I found the VSP here at Fastlane. Any idea where can I get the CCU(dealer:$318)?

Thanks!

I think this car wasn't in the flood because I couldn't find any debris and dirt in the engine compartment and radiator section. the PO might have flooded the inside with a garden hose. sunroof was wide opened and two windows were left half way down. I don't think anybody will do that in the rain.

Is there any aftermarket Comfort Control Unit available? thanks!

No such thing as an aftermarket CCU -- you will have to buy a new one from MB or find a used one at a junk yard.

Pull the carpets if you haven't already and make sure the floor is DRY -- this includes under the sound-deadening stuff, or you may be faced with floor rot in a few years. If there is water under the sound deadening, I'd consider stripping it out and re-painting the floor pans if you find any rust, then replacing the sound deadening. Classic rustout starting point on MB cars.

Also, check to make sure seat pads aren't still damp, or they will mold and drive you crazy. Ditto for kick panels and anything else that may have absorbed water from the flooding. Once it is dry you will most likely be OK. Close the windows and sunroof when you leave the car!!!!! (I wish my mother would do that.....!)

Otherwise it sounds like a very good car at a wonderful price!

If you do not want to buy a new item, try PGAUTO.COM. If the unit you are referring to is under the rear left seat, mine went bad and I got a used unit for $100 at PG AUTO.

What auction did you purchase the car from, I would say it is a good deal, I am sure that there are many parts that are good. If you need help, let me know, I have the factory manuals.

Thanks! I did yank the carpet and pressure wash it with carpet cleaner. It will take a while to dry up. There were some rust at the seat mounting area. Hopefully, next weekend I can put them back together.

CJ:
I got it from Insurance Auto Aution here in Houston.

Bill:
It has the MB Tex.

Heck, I'd buy that car for $4200, with only 102K miles i would drive it into the ground (300K, 400K, 500K?). You cant lose with that car, you would probably do ok even if you sold it to someone. I think you got a GREAT deal.

There was a 1996 model with 67k mile but the water got to the dash board. Looked like its engine was locked up, I tried to jerk the belt but no movement at all. it was sold for $8600.

Replace the carpet! It's surprisingly cheap-I did mine recently and it was under $200. What the heck-you got a killer deal (barring any mechanical anomalies) so spring for the new carpet!

I looked and these auctions are around me but you need a dealer ID. DAMN!

I have been to many auctions were you cant start the car or there is something wrong with the car and it wont start, so I tried yanking the belt to no avail. I dont think this is a good test to see if the motor is siezed. You need some leverage on your side with a big wrench to turn the motor.

yes, you do need a dealer lic.(A friend of mine has it). They'll let you inspect them one day before the auction.

Bill, they have two locations and the other one is near Main st. and hwy90. Here are some other auctions in Houston area:

Bayou City

Copart

there is another one in pasadena area...not sure what the name is.

I got my SD from Houston Auto Auction(open to public, deposit required) in 1997 for $3k with 167k miles on it. There, you can actually test drive it for 3 miles after you pay.

CC Unit, new or rebuild

I am not sure if you can get it for a 91 model,
but check with http://www************************
They have an exceptional catalog for Mercedes.
I use it as a guide all the time.
Anyway they call them AC Switch Assembly.
Maybe that will help with some more replacement parts.

good luck, great buy Wolfgang

Thanks for the info, Wolfgang. Almost every place I called they told me to go to the dealer. I finally found one at German Star for $280 + $8 shipping. I should receive it sometime this week.
