300SDL Headlight problem....
Out of the blue the headlights and low beams do not want to cooperate... they worked fine minutes before I pulled over and got something to eat, but when I came out and started the car the headlight switch did nothing. The parking lights work, but the low beams, fog lights, tail lights and headlights do not. I tried multiple fuses, maybe I'm not trying the right one, but with no luck. The highbeams (only if you hold, won't click and come on) and hazards work also. ANY ideas? This car has officially become daytime only if I can't figure out the problem...

Sorry to say, but suddenly they pulled the same move on me... They worked fine all last night (kept checking with no problems), even drove earlier today and they worked back and forth for about five minutes even cut the car off and back on and they worked. Five minutes later, I decided to use just the lowbeams and they worked until I pulled into my driveway and realized the lowbeams and headlights no longer worked with the switch...Parking lights still work again.Tried switching fuses with no luck and accidentaly dropped a fuse underneath box!! Last night I used a temporary red fuse which I think is 15 amp, which seemed to fix it. I think the correct fuse is white which is 8 amp. Could I have possibly fried a wire, the highbeams no longer work either. Going to buy a fuse kit tommorow and take a pic of my recent fuse setup, maybe get some help on which ones to change... Thanks again for all of your help!

You'll need a voltmeter.
When the problem occurs (no low beams), check for voltage at fuse #9. If you have voltage at fuse #9 but no low beams, you've got a failure in the "exterior lamp failure monitoring unit". This device lives between the fuses and all of the lights on the vehicle. It's a transistorized device and it's not repairable without specialized equipment. The unit is in the fuse box..........all the way in the back of the box as you face the box from the left side of the vehicle. It's the widest relay in the box..........the full width of all the front four relays. It's not a common failure, but, I don't see any other possibility if your contacts are clean on the fuses. I would check that first. Poor maintenance practices always leads us to a wrong diagnosis. |
