I feel your pain, man!
I'm just glad I've got a couple gassers to drive in leiu of the diesel! Although I've got a trip tomorrow morning about 100 miles round trip and, you guessed it, I'll be taking the Benz (I just love it on the highway!).

With winter nearing and demand for heating oil on the rise I don't see a meaningful drop in diesel fuel until the spring

Choosing between driving the Suburban and the Benz is getting tougher. It almost costs as much to drive the SDL as it does to drive the Suburban. If gas goes down another 20 cents or so it will be cheaper to take the truck!

Diesel doesn't need to come down, gas needs to go UP.

Diesel fuel costs more right now, but diesel MB's seem to hold their value better than gas ones, think long term. Gas will not be cheap long term. You can buy a minty 420Sel for maybe 2-3k, whereas a nice diesel MB would cost 4-6k. Of course, even fueling a 15mpg v8 Mercedes that requires premuim would still be cheaper to run than a 22mpg diesel.

My fuel cost is negligible no matter what fuel costs. I only have a 4.5 mile round trip drive from work each day. With fuel at 2.85 around here and my mpg's around 24....thats about 50 cents a day....
I get paid to drive for work too, this week I only drove 6 miles, but made $3.51 doing it....so I actually came out even for the week. $0 spent on fuel!

I believe diesel will never be lower than gas again!
Think about it, trucks, most farm equipment, locomotives, and jets (jet fuel is nearly identical) all MUST use diesel. The demand is high, the consumer is captive. This is not lost on the oil companies. They can sell all they wish to make at the price of their choosing. "Just drill baby" isn't going to help either. Those same oil companies aren't going to lower their prices to the US market when they can sell their oil to the world market at a higher rate. The whole "just drill baby" idea is bs. The only way it could have any significant impact is if a huge find could be made and thereby flood the market with crude. They may actually make a huge find but I'm willing to bet they will not flood the market with crude. OPEC reduced production because they want to raise the price of crude. There is no shortage yet, there is only price control. The only reason fuel has come down at all is lower demand. The only answer is reduce the demand further. Better yet find an alternative!

You might think this also
The oil companies like those big profits. Yet they were very much under asult from the American Public when we were in that $4.00 gas era. So, drop the price of gasoline and quiet the complaints of hundreds of millions of car drivers and keep it up for the diesel and jet fuel buyers. Their screaming can't be nearly so loud.

Don't feel too bad; I'm paying $5.46 a gallon for B99 biodiesel. Last year when I first started buying it, it was only about $3 a gallon and the price went up as the price of diesel went up. Unfortunately, it hasn't dropped like diesel and gasoline have. I buy it from a petroleum company, so while they sell it so they can have a monopoly on it in the area, I'm sure they don't want to sell much of it (unless people like me who want to support biodiesel are willing to pay, of course).

Public ignorance is the best thing going for the oil companies. I recently found out that heating oil isn't even made from the same type of crude oil as diesel or gas. (Something about "light sweet" compared to heavy). So that really pissed me off. Then, just this week, a consumer watch group reported in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that almost 50% of the available land allotments for drilling on government lands were idle, many had never been drilled at all. So, in reality, diesel should always be cheaper than gas due to refining techniques, and heating oil should not be a factor in it, either. I'm also in agreement with the others as far as the idea that more drilling would not lower prices. If you believe big corporations have a care for how much you pay compared to how much profit they make, just look at how the Bail Out boys are spending our money on golden parachutes, exotic company get togethers and executive robbery.
That being said, the price of diesel has just come down to $2.59 just south of St. Louis, and gas is about $1.71 down at the corner Casey's gas station. (I wish they sold diesel!) I'm just concerned that the drop may have been a ploy for the election. Watch out for the Thanksgiving travel gouge!!

You got it! It's time for this country to get some petrochemical tough love. If fuel prices come up, vehicles will meet fueling requirements within 5-10 years (20-30 if we rely on the big 3). The American public has a very short memory, so with fuel prices coming down, nobody cares and most have forgotten how much they spent when it was expensive.

I havn't bought fuel for my car in over a month, since we have some diesel were trying to get rid of to move a tank. That source is almost gone so I'll trade the 23mpg $3.25 diesel car for a 28mpg $2.16 gas VW. I'm going to try my hardest to avoid buying diesel until May of next year. Since I drive 300-400 miles a week the difference goes right into my pocket. Diesel is really losing its advantage at least in my eyes. If I was ordering a new E class I'd go for the diesel since it doesn't cost any more and I prefer them. But more likely than not I won't be buying a diesel car next time around. Probably an A4 or gas E class.

at 2.99 a gallon, im not complaining. That is incredibly cheap. For 2.99 you can move yourself, your large luxury car and four friends 25 miles
160 miles would cost about 20 bucks Not very expensive energy
