84 300SD Ignition lock problem
I have the usual problem with the key not being able to turn the lock on my 84 300SD. HOWEVER, in my case it is a problem with the tumblers. I tried all the vibrating, upside down, etc. suggestions to get the key to turn. All to no avail. Now the key is broken off in the tumbler. I am resigned to buying a new housing, tumbler/keys, and ignition switch.
My question is this. Can anyone tell me the easiest way to get the wiring harness disconnected from the old housing/switch WHILE the key CANNOT be turned to the first "on" position? The tumbler is locked in the off position. I could put the housing in a drill press and drill out the tumbler (in order to salvage the tumbler cover) if I could get the harness disconnected from the back of the ignition switch. All advice I have found for removing the harness says to put the key in the "on" position. This I cannot do. Thank YOU! pls feel free to reply here with a post or email me at tomaryberry@earthlink.net. Tom |

Tom.
Do you know (or think) the key and tumbler are original to the car? Like did the key fit the doors, trunk, and glove box? If so AND you can get the broken key OUT, then I would suggest you order a replacement MASTER Key from your local MB dealer --- Cost about $12.50 or so. I don't think it is possible to remove the plug (intact) off the back of the ignition module unless the key is in position one; same thing with removing the ignition module (intact) from the steering wheel. I know this isn't what you wanted to hear......

There should be more than a few Threads in the DIY section on the whole process.
