Water leak at vent behind rear passenger windows -- 1984 MBZ 300D Turbo

Water is leaking into the passenger compartment through the exterior vent behind rear passenger windows on my 1984 MBZ 300D Turbo.

I know this is it because I saw it during a pressure test at a highly reputable auto body shop. The thing is, they have not yet figured out how to stop it. And my buddy, a mechanic who has been working on MBZs for more than 30 years has never heard of this problem.

Help..... please.

This is the final leak and the most stubborn one. I already replaced all door seals, as well as the front and rear window seals.

Behind the exterior vent, on the inside is a solid plastic trim that runs vertically between the rear package shelf and the cieling, which conceals the actual position of the leak . . . unless it is removed. Then from there it runs down behind the rear seat and onto the carpet below, where it accumulates and finally, by capillary action, makes its way to the other side of the rear passenger area.

Again, help please. How can I stop this flow of water through the vent into the passenger space?

So far, the auto body shop has suggested that there is some sort of flap inside this vent that allows air to exit, while halting water. And that flap has probably become brittle (as the rest of the plastic products in this year vehicle have become) and no longer functions. Does that ring a bell with anyone?

Thank you,
Paul

Exclamation Somebody. . . .?

Is there nobody out there that knows about this kind of leak?

Is there a part that lets air out when the doors are slamed shut and prevents water from entering through that same vent?

Thanks,
Paul

Not ignoring you Paul, just haven't run across that myself.
I do know that up in the headliner there is a rear sunroof drain on either side that has a connection point back there towards the C-pillar to a rubber tube. That rubber tube that runs down the C-pillar can come loose and allow water from sunroof channel to run down the side back there.
I haven't ever explored the rear vent area although when spraying these off at the car wash I've often wondered what would happen if I sprayed right into those slits running down the C-pillar facing the outside.
Hopefully somebody else has seen this. Be patient and wait for the right person because, to be honest I can never remember this being discussed.....

Jimmy,

Thanks for the post.

I drive in heavy rain a lot. Sometimes the stuff comes down almost horizontal. Anyway, the auto body repair shop has verified the leak is coming in through the vents behind the rear passnger doors. It is not coming from the sunroof drains. All door seals and window strips were replaced. Drains underhood and sunroof are clear.

They say there's a flap that relieves cabin pressure when doors are slammed and closes to keep out water. The catch now is that the auto body repair shop cannot locate this "flap" they say has probably dried out. They have already asked at a large MBZ parts department. I can't see this place being far off. The cars I saw in that place make my head spin -- Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Astin-Martin. . . all in mint condition. Even the floor in this place is clean, shiny and like it was just painted. They even have giant HEPA air cleaner on the cieling.

Thanks again,
Paul
