New old 300d and none of the windows go down.

Its been a while since I posted anything because I've been transitioning to a different '82 300d due to an idiot driving into my previous one...long story and an expensive way to get a parts car. Anyway, the car is a really nice 152K specimen with leather seats and a lot of garage time...well preserved. The little old lady that owned it had the oil changed religiously, but apparently did nothing else, so the car had a myriad of typical problems, most of which I fixed or have a handle on. BUT, driving to work the other day suddenly NONE of my window switches worked (everything worked fine previously). All were in the full up position, and still are. I've checked fuses (different circuits for different windows). I even read the relevant sections of the owners manual, which assumes everything works, so not much help. The windows operate if the ignition is in the on/drive position of course, so perhaps a wire came loose or something, but I thought I'd see if anyone had dealt with this. A search was not immediately fruitful.

Has anyone had this problem and tracked down the problem and/or solution?

Thanks

Try a serch for window switch cleaning. Somebody probably spilled soda on the switches.

I thought of that, but the interior of that car is clean and the odd thing is that they ALL worked perfectly, then NONE of them worked. Has to be something more systemic.

A simultaneous failure of all four windows would make the window relay a prime suspect. The lack of power to the fuses would support that diagnosis.

Thanks! I'm going to do some electrical tracking tomorrow. I didn't think about a relay, but that would make sense. Where's that particular relay located, if you know off the top of your head? I can pull one from my parts donor and figure it out quickly if I know where to start grabbing. Will report back if I figure it out.

The window relay is behind the instrument cluster. I believe that it is the same type of "ice cube" relay as the aux fan and a/c compressor relays that are on the inside left fender well.

Ok, I'll go digging tomorrow. I have a couple spare relays and hopefully will sort it out.

mine has power at the fuses so that should rule the realy out. i think i have a voltage drop across the relay.

Did you try to clean the contacts on each end of the fuses and the fuse-holder?

In humid climates the contacts will corrode but do not appear to be corroded. Try buffing the contacts with some emory or crocus cloth (superfine sandpaper) or in a pinch use a fingernail file or Q-tip covered with aluminum foil.
If you have it use a drop of electrical contact cleaner, or a drop of wd40(not a wholesale spraying)

OK, I fixed it. It was the relay. Remove kick panel, push out instrument cluster as far as possible without disconnecting anything. Peer over the top and down at about the center of the panel and you will see the top of the relay mounted on a bracket. If you have small hands reach in there and pull it out, or get a small handed assistant to do it. Pop in a new relay or one of your spares. If NONE of your windows worked, this will make them work, or at least more than none of them. Surprisingly, I could not find a previous explicit instruction for finding this one.

Well, Tangofox did mention it was behind the instrument cluster, which got me in the vicinity, but its still a bit hard to spot if you don't know exactly where to peek. Thanks.

finding window relay

Anyone know where to get new relays, as none of my windows work, and I just cleaned all the switches, and fuses. I can't seem to find the relays for sale anywhere.

I tried that part number here and other part web sites, but no luck. Does anyone have any parts cars that I could buy from? Or has anyone bought one of these?

Thanks
