Engine shocks need to be disconnected?

Just starting into the engine mount replacement process and I'm assuming that one end (bottom?) of each shock must be disconnected before the motor can actually be 'lifted'? Thanks

PS: I did a quick scan of some SEARCH posts but couldn't find anything relating!

Absolutely. Otherwise, you risk tearing the shock mount.

There is a 7mm wrench flat on the shock shaft, in case you haven't found it.

Yes it is a good idea to disconnect at least the bottom.
if you take it out you can test it. Chancesare they need to be replaced too.

Don't jack up the engine any more than you have to. Just enough to get the mount's in & out.

I am aware of this 'flat' spot on the shaft, however, there is not much, if any, shaft actually showing! What am I missing?

One additional thing. The torque value for the center (M12 x 40) engine mount bolt ("center" refers to the bolt, not the mount) specified in the Haynes Manual is way too high. Use that figure (130 Nm) and you will likely strip the threads in the mount arm. The 617.95 engine manual specifies 70Nm.

Update!

DONE!

WHAT A DIFFERENCE in the vibration level!

That's something I've dealt with over the past couple years - not having another Benz to compare mine with. However, a couple months ago, I happened across a local classified ad for a 1984 300SD (the ad actually read "300D"). Anywho, my wife and kids and I went over to look at it and drive it and that's when I got to thinking that mine just has this annoying vibration to it when we are stopped in traffic. The SD was just sooooo much more smooth running than mine. My Indy suggested I change out the motor mounts and I'm so glad I did.

I'm s l o w working on the car, a 2 hour job for most of you will mean 6 -8 hour job for me! Don't know why but that's just the way it always turns out. This relatively easy job took me prolly 5-6 hours BUT IT'S DONE!!!

I work slow on my SDL, doing a bit at a time. Love this forum, used as reference before starting and during whatever part I'm replacing. Did my engine mounts, compared old to new, old had dropped almost an inch from new ones, what a difference in idle steadiness. Today I put in new shifter bushings, can't say replace because no old ones left. Car was so bad it would roll in park and sometimes not start unless I moved gear shift, thats all changed. While doing bushings I was looking at transmission mount, so what the heck replaced it also, the old had collapsed about 1/2 inch from new. Have had a box of replacement parts for over a year, was qouted $4-500 to have them installed by indie, am slowly whittling down parts so when I have him do what I can't the labor should be considerably less. Everything I've done makes a difference in car handling and sound and feel, be nice when I get brakes and front end up to snuff, may get some idea of what it was like new.

Sounds like our cars are in about the same repair!

I too need front end parts replaced and plan to do it - all in good time I guess...

It's a great blessing to be able to do most of the work needed - it would dry up my wallet if otherwise.
