Oil pan change- gasket sealer or no gasket sealer?

I'm getting ready (now) to change my oil and was going to change my oil pan gasket and clean it out while I'm doing it. I've had a leak from a cracked (i.e., broken off) part on the bottom of my air filter housing. The tube that sends the oil back to where ever, and a 2" section of the flange on the housing bottom rubber seal is missing, so I have oil leaking down on my exhaust. Since there is oil just about everywhere from the bottom of the valve cover down, I figured anything is suspect. I'm not doing this again till spring, so if I'm going to do it, I might as well do it now. BTW, I changed my valve cover gasket 2 weeks ago when I changed the fuel filters and air filter. So it only looks like it's leaking. Anyway, before I venture out into my open air shop in this cold Missouri weather, can anyone tell me if it's standard procedure to seal or not to seal a Mercedes 81 300D oil pan gasket? Thanks for the speedy responses. I appreciate it. Lee

NOT standard procedure.

Some like a VERY thin film on the pan to set up before installing, but is not necessary unless you have a pan deformity.

I use Permatex gray RTV or Toyota semi drying gray RTV on an oil pan whether called for or not.

I put a very thin layer of RTV on the pan side of the gasket. No leaks yet...
