'82 240D power steering - missing parts?
Recently my power steering pump has been leaking out the cap on my '82 240D. I've had it for over a year and it had not leaked before now, and now its turned into a gusher. I've always wondered if this was the correct setup, since I've seen pictorials on the power steering filter change and the internals of my pump look different.
For example, the pump in this thread: power steering filter replace I've attached pictures of what my pump looks like. All that is holding the spring in is a crimp washer, not the bolt and plastic assembly I see in other pictures. This is probably a stupid question, but I assume that my leak is from not having the plastic shield in the reservoir and the fluid is getting past the wingnut. This was a replacement engine, but I'm not quite sure what year car the engine came from as it was replaced well before I owned the car. I've replaced the filter and I'm flushing out the old fluid which is probably the rest of the reason its leaking.

Is there a gasket inside the cap of the reservoir?
I had a tear in mine that caused fluid to slosh out of the reservoir. I ended up glueing my old one back together and so far it has held.... Hate to tell ya, but if it's missing, you could be in for some old-fashioned gasket fabrication: Power Steering Gasket 1980 240D

123 pumps are different from 201 and later 126 pumps. What you see is normal for your car.

There should be a rubber 'washer ' type gasket in the cap. Look there as see if you have one and what condition.

Well crap. Yes, there is a gasket inside the cap. I replaced the gasket with a new one. The fluid comes out the stud and past the wingnut. I've tried putting bearing grease on the threads but eventually it'll make it past and out the cap.
I guess I will see how it does after the flush.

When was the last time you replaced the filter?

I think there was also some type of rubber grommet, where the threads and wingnut are. It was/is inside the cap though. Sound like yours is missing. I'd try RTV sealant. Also some type of rubber washer between the wing nut and cap top.
