Some photos that will clarify boost increase procedure.

Hey everyone, I've pieced together some photos regarding the boost increase procedure and stuck in on my website. Hopefully it will make things a bit easier for anyone that wants to try it out.

If you want full details, you can search the archives. There was a long thread a few weeks ago about this.

Nice work Speedy. I swear I saw something similar to the b.c. at home depot this weekend. It was a brass needle valve with a small handle. It costs around $4. I wanted to buy it, but they did not have barbs to go over the connections. I'll try a different location and post pics if it works. Can you tell if your b.c. spring loaded? The front end of your car looks cool, especially with the euro lights. I always thought that US spec lights did a diservice to our cars.

Speedy,
Wonderful job with the pictures and descriptions. It's exactly what I needed. Your car looks great, and I really love the black grill insert and wood shifter. By the way, where did you get your shift knob? I'd really like to install one of those but I want it to match the wood already in the car. Also, did you paint the grill insert yourself or did you have to buy it somewhere. I'm installing one of those controllers this weekend and now with your webpage, I can print it out and take it to the parts store and have them get me exactly what I need without confusion.
Thanks again!

SW,
I have to disagree, I love my round lights. I think they make the car look even more unique.

Alex

To answer a few questions...

SW: Yes, the boost controller is spring loaded. I'm not sure how much tension the spring has in it, and from what I'd imagine, tons of trial and error would be involved with building your own boost controller. If you do it, please let us all know!

DieselHead: Yes, I painted the grill insert myself. I was actually thinking of buying a new one at first, but now there's really no need to. I got the shift knob from Ebay. Some guy was selling a whole bunch of them for $18. They're not OEM Mercedes-Benz, but they do fit well, and the wood actually matches! He's got more of them here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=595583036&r=0&t=0

Quick question: how do you know when you have the ALDA setting right? Thanks

Alex,

The best way to tell if the ALDA setting is right would be to monitor the exhaust gas temperature (egt) pre turbo. Since you will be adding more fuel by adjusting the ALDA, more fuel means more heat. An egt gauge would help monitor the temps in the engine. I think I read somewhere that egt's should be no higher than the 1100F range in the VW tdi's. You could also wing it by looking for a slight hint of smoke, but monitoring the egt is the best method.

BTW, I like the round lights too, they give the car a classic look. But I think the light assembly should house the beams like in the Bentley or in any euro light assy because the car look wider and more solid. I think the British spec 123's gave the appearance of round lights housed in the assembly.

SW
