Tank Strainer Replacement? 87 300D
 

Has anyone replaced in tank strainer on 87 300D ? If so, how ?

This problem is really pissing me off, cant run on less than 1/4 tank dino. I swear I better not kill another starter motor! My knuckles are still bruised from 1st time I had to replace it.

requires draining the fuel, making the proper disconnects and removing the tank. I think a 46mm socket is required to require remove the old strainer. A pipe wrench or big channel works will work in a pinch BUT BE CAREFUL WITH THEM

I looked at the EPC diagram of the 124 300Td and it looks like the 123 setup. Phil's picture shows it to be the same setup also. Go under the car and in the center , or so, of the tank should be a large aluminum nut looking thing. this is probably your filter. Drain the tank as much as you can via one of the rubber hoses. Then remove the filter. I'm not sure what size wrench. For the wagon I used a bolt head with 2 nuts jambed on the bolt. Measure the size you need and get the appropriate wrench or bolt. Clean the screen with carb cleaner and if it is algae then treat the tank.
Have a bucket to catch the fuel left in the tank when you pull the screen.
Get a new Oring for the screen from the dealer or Phil if he can get it.

PS edit since I looked up the part number. The 87 and 82 use the same part number. buy a 22mm bolt and 2 nuts to remove the screen.

yeah pretty much like the w123 except for some differences

46 mm wrench is for the sedan, not the wagon. A 22mm bolt and 2 nuts works well

You have to drain the tank first. Then remove the hose that leads to the strainer. Remove the rubber covering---should be able to remove with your hands. To remove the strainer, I made a 46mm strainer removal out of angle brackets I had lying around and a piece of steel. I then welded on two nuts that was threaded on a bolt. It worked amazingly enough. Wanna borrow it? :)

I recall it was a bear getting it off. it almost felt like I was going to strip threads. But one good push w/ a cheater bar and the strainer came off.

It's a nasty job. There will be fuel all over the ground and all over you, no matter how careful you are. Wear your raggiest garage clothes, nitrile gloves, and have the kitty litter handy.

face shield would be prudent too. Ask me how i know!

Sold. I will try that out, as it doesnt involve custom welded 46mm sockets and diesel fuel splashing onto my face. I guess Im getting old.

pint of star tron showed up today, I dumped a few oz into tank...im at 1/2 tank right now, so the problem should surface here in a few days...we shall see.
