OT: Door Check Hinge Body Mounting
I tried one of the "other" forums and nobody seems to know the answer. Hopefully someone here can relieve some of my ignorance:
The CD FSM manual has no information that I can find on this matter. The door check strap comes out of the door where it attaches to a hinge like mechanism that is mounted inside the body. That mechanism inside the body has broken and moves back and forth with the door. The body sheet metal has started to tear where it hits. I suspect that the check strap bound one day and the driver kicked or forced the door open breaking this piece. The check strap now moves fairly smoothly inside the door. Preparatory to doing the work I ordered what I thought was the part from Duval motors. The part that was shipped is quite large but looks sort of like it may be it though the mounting holes do not appear correct. But on the new part the hinge is on a long arm and can swing back and forth withing the housing. The part should be rigid and not move. Last of all I cannot see how to remove the pin ("lock on bolt" in the manual) that attaches the strap to the hinge. My questions are: 1) How do you remove the "lock on bolt"? 2) If I was sent the correct part is it possible that it should be filled with rubber or similar material to prevent the arm from moving back and forth? 3) How do you reach the part? Removing the inside side carpet trim shows no apparent access. It looks like I would have to remove the quarter panel/front fender. |

Is this on a front or rear door?
I read somewhere that the pin holder has to be welded in. Someone who really knows about this should chime.

Front driver's door. But I just found out that I was shipped the wrong part. I am going to try just welding the hinge in place.

I've never worked on a 126, but on a 123 and a 201 that I have experience with the check strap connects with a pin to the body. The pin is held in place with a circlip, you pull the circlip, drive the pin out (sometimes they're stuck really badly). Pull the door skin, pull the 4 (I think, might be 3) bolts that hold the check strap assembly in, remove the assembly (I usually manage to cut my hand), insert the new assembly, put the bolts in. Pull the strap out enough to put the pin and clip back in place (I usually bang my hand at this point) and put the door skin back on.
The first time probably took me an hour, lots of headscratching and whatnot. Now I'm down to maybe 10 minutes once I find the right tools. (10mm socket?) I've done I think 3 on my 190D and 2 on my 240D. Easy project that makes you feel good. Now if you're suggesting the strap mount has fallen into the body thats bad and I can't help you with it.

The strap mount is the problem. But it is still attached. That part I plan on just welding into place.
