What car please.
On a 617 engine, the GP light, lack thereof, indicates a GP problem.
On a newer American gasser, the check engine light concerns the emission system.
Good luck, keep us posted.

96 or newer? Mercedes?
(Add your car to your signature, go to USER CP, EDIT SIG)

Go to dieselgiant.com and follow the GP test procedure there for the W123. The relay is a lil bit different but the principles are all the same.
Then you'll know if it is a GP or the relay. If realy, try cleaning the electrical plug.

In the mean time you ought to test the GP's and relay cause one or the other is def involved becaue the GP light is lit up.

Glow plug and CEL on also

I have the same issue...99 E300D

.......both the CEL and the glow plug light stay on after the engine is started. Car starts and runs fine.

I've had this occur before and after a week or so,.... both went out ??????? Not this time though ...in over a week.

Since it's starting and running OK...can damage occur if I don't fix it right away.

What's happening while the engine is runnng with the glow plug light on? Is one or more of the glow plugs still on?

Is there a step-by-step guide here for diagnosing glow plug problems?

Warren C.

My 96 E300D check engine light came on, I got out, checked engine had one, called dealer, said if all indicators (oil/temp, etc) were in the green, ok to drive. took it in and the co2 sensor needed replacing.
FWIW.

Indicates a GP issue usually. Go to Dieselgiant.com and follow the tutorial for the W123. Same principals on our cars; relay is a bit different.
