how do know it is the head gasket and not a head crack?

Is there any big downside to using Bar's Leak on a 300SDL, until one is ready to work on the head. Reading some other threads:

and another thread ( i cannot locate now ) who used it with good success, but no long term feedback.

Head fractures seem to include oil in the coolant among other issues.

I just have massive clouds of smoke, No 1 exhaust port wet with oil, etc. I'm 100% sure this is my issue.

My pal tried it, killed a perfectly good radiator. Not a stop gap I'd use, nor recommend... the vehicle is broken, time to fix properly.

I say I am surprised because the only symptom was high pressure in the cooling system.

I now need a Knew head and have read a lot about the #14 heads (which mine is) and do not want to replace it with a #14 head unless absolutley necessary.

My question is does anyone have any leads on #17 or higher head?

I have been looking at reman's at ADC Cylinder heads but have not called about the head #'s since I just removed the head today.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
I forgot to add. I've been searching threads related to the 603 cylinder head because mine is having trouble too. I will be removing the head on my 300sdl (#14 head). I don't know if the head is cracked or a head gasket. The engine consumes coolant and when I pulled the injectors to perform a compression test, coolant sprayed from # 4 cylinder when I ran the starter.

I also need to rebuild the turbo, it leaks oil at the intake tube connection and smokes when first started.

Can I remove the head with the turbo attached, or should I remove turbo first, as is stated in the manual?

The head comes off easily without touching the turbo.

Where does the turbo oil supply tube connect? I can't see where it attaches in my manual. I suspect the oil return goes into the oil pan.

I sold a #22 head to BC and he had it sent to Metric Motors to become "brand new". THERE ARE used good head around- like I said check the parts section.

It doesn't go into the head. That much I know.

It goes into the block by where the exhaust pipe goes down.

Turbo oil supply is from the block by the block heater and coolant drain. IIRC the line is clamped to the engine mount arm besides the attachments at the block and turbo. The oil supply line kinks easily. Best to remove it and store it safely before doing anything else when removing the head. The turbo oil drain is a slip fit. Remove the drain fitting into the block so you don't damage the tube while lifting the head.
