This is changing due to the "Common Rail System" demanding finer filtration. CAT built a Plant to make Filters and is making a 2 absolute micron filters for the Engines with the Common Rail Systems.

Some filter companies have also added finer filters that fit older applications.

Another note; while I was at NAPA the Counter Guy told me that ther was a shortage of 2 micron Racor filter cartridges due to the Coast Guard requiring finer filtration on Boats (I live near the Port of Long Beach/Los Angeles).

In general there seems to be a trend towards finer filtration for both Fuel and Engine Oil.
