Ignition Locked. NEED HELP. Hotwire?

Hi,
Recently my ignition turn (1984 mercedes 300D) has been giving me trouble and it finally jammed. I cant turn the key no matter how hard I try and the wheel is locked. Ive been reading around and people mention getting it drilled but I cant afford this. Im getting to the point of considering hotwiring the thing. Does anyone know how this is done, Ive heard some people install buttons to bypass the ignition. Any help hotwiring or alternatives would be much appreciated. And I promise Im not a criminal, just a man who needs to drive his car.

Thanks
Sam

Hotwiring the thing isn't going to release the steering lock.........so, unless you don't plan on making any turns..........getting that cylinder to unlock one more time is the way to go.

Thanks,

Thank god I just got it to turn, it required some serious yanking but it moved, started the car once but when I turned it back and tried again the car wont start. I haven't taken the key out but my forceful turning seems to have effected the final key flick to connect the starters. It turns on the electric fine and the yellow coil light does its thing but the starters dont seem to be connecting. Did I rotate the whole tumbler somehow? Would it be best to remove the tumbler in the 1 position and have it towed to a mechanic?

Thanks guys
Sam

Ignition Tumbler

(Unless you've damaged the Steering Lock Itself...If you can get the
Tumbler out ...You're Golden..."Alla Youse Gotta douse" is install your
New Tumbler [order from dealer with Registration as Proof of ownership]
which will come with a VIN matched Key.)

'Have you got it to Position #1 ??? 'Leave it there!

[The Ignition Tumbler is KAPUT ...If you try to turn it OFF and then On
again you May Very Well be Out Of Luck (AND lotsa Dinero) ]

That's the only way you'll get the Tumbler out without Expensive Drilling!

Before you contemplate anything rash, some reading materiel:

300CD: Yep, ignition tumbler turns no more

tumbler removal

I now have it moving to the 1,2 and 3 position. I sort of forced it to get there and now the fire to get the engine started doesnt go. If I really crank the key hard I can hear the starter trying. Is it worth pushing this to start by cranking or should I tow this thing to the closest shop for them to take out the ignition.

Also the ignition tumbler is brand new from mercedes (<4 months) so Im feeling something else in there must be the problem

-Sam

It's not always the cylinder that fails - the ignition lock housing also goes ca-put.

If the cylinder is new, I would look at the shut off switch attached to the lock. It is a small metal piece with two vacuum lines connected to it. It has to be adjusted so that the lock will turn. If it is attached too tightly the cam that operates the switch can jam and you will not be able to turn the key fully to the start position. I know, I did that when I installed a new one. Try this, remove the instrument cluster and try to loosen the switch. There are two nuts holding it to the main switch.

it is really not too hard to do yourself, if you replaced the tumbler, follow those steps, then you can remove the ignition switch itself, or diagnose the problem,.
