transmission problems
We have a 1979 300td with 200,000 miles. My dad thinks it's to the point where we should just donate it, but I need a car that I don't care to much if anything happens to it at school. The transmission is shot. We can get a hold of a used transmission for $400, uninstalled. My question is how hard is it to put in a new transmission? Is it something somebody with a little bit of mechanical know how and skill can accomplish? The car runs fairly well, put it is not too strong on the cosmetic side. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

It is pretty straight forward but it is pretty labor intensive. You have to make sure you get the car up in the air high enough to be able to roll the tranny out after it is removed. Make sure the car is well supported (think safety!). The hardest part of the job, to me, is removing the bolts that hold the tranny to the engine. Get a manual and come here to ask the questions. Plan on taking at least three days if you are working on it at your liesure. May as well check out the driveshaft since you have it out (flex disc, bearing, etc).

The Haynes manual should be adequate. The Chiltons manual says that the engine and transmission should come out together and describes that process. The MB CD manual for the W126 does not describe removing and replacing the transmission that I can find.
It's not the most diffcult thing but having someone around who's done this type of work, not necessarily on an MB, would be helpful. You don't want a transmission to fall on you! You have to get creative with basic tools to reach some of the engine-transmission bolts. Some folks use looong socket extensions and u-joints, I seem to manage with box wrenches and short socket extensions. When the transmission separates from the engine, tie some wire across the front end of the transmission so the torque converter doesn't fall out as you lower the transmission. Same when you raise the transmission back into place. I'm able to drop the transmission on an SD without removing the exhaust system or drive shaft. The less I have to deal with parts that weigh more than I do the better. I don't know if such is possible on a TD. Plus it's always good to check these things so shortcuts don't always save time in the long run. What I do so I don't have to get the car so high is transfer the transmission from the jack to a drip pan while under the car. Then I pull the drip pan and transmission out from under the car. Saves me from having to get a jack with more reach or stacking wood blocks to make the jack taller. Finally, consider what the car is worth now and when you're done. I'm looking at a clean rust free 79 TD with 150K miles for just under $2000. A guy I know got a mechanically sound 83 TD for $2000 just last week. Sixto 91 300SE 81 300SD ... buy me |

mmm ..81 SD.mmmm (Homer)
people at work were at the local auto auction this a.m., and said there was an 88 wagon that stopped bidding at $1000, said the body/interior great. Wish I would've been there. I would've thought of something to tell the wife by tonight.

Check with a local tansmission shop -- it may be easier to have them do the swap for you than get what you need to do it yourself.
I suspect it will be easier to pull engine and transmission than to get the transmission off. I've not done it, but it is possible to remove and replace the tranny without taking the engine out, but you will have to find a way to lower the rear of the engine enough to get the upper transmission bolts back in -- it drops just fine with the tranny on, but when it's off, it is almost impossible to reach the top ones going back on. Explains why they were missing on my brother's 75 300D....! Peter
