oil
I dump one of the 5 quart jugs, then measure 2.4 additional quarts using the handy pyrex 4-cup measuring container from the kitchen. Nobody asks any questions, nobody offers any explanation, and nobody gets hurt.

My 300 takes an even two gallons, so no problem there. The 240 takes something like six and half quarts, so I dump in the first gallon, then add about a quart at a time from the second gallon jug until the oil level is close to right. Then I start it, let it get full oil pressure, and shut it down. Then I recheck and add as needed. I keep the remainder of the gallon in the trunk for later. I do the same with the 250, since both of them use oil between changes. By some miracle, the 300 doesn't.

Correct Oil Level
jbach,
Please take the "little pinch" out of your lifetime to get the level correct. (That 602.962 engine will not tolerate "Overfill") Level Space to park + measure (Fore and Aft as well as Port to Starboard) Check oil with engine warm 5 minutes after shutdown.

If measuring is the problem.....just buy the exact amount you need.
Even "Wally World" sells individual quarts of Rotella......buy a 4qrt jug and 3 individual quarts. I don't think the price difference is going to break you.

If you are measuring with the oil stone cold you are probably getting some oil residual on the high inside of the dip tube. Warm oil will drain back into the oil pan and give you a more accurate read. And make sure you are parked on a flat surface......that goes for checking the trans fluid to. And measure twice after you wipe off the dip stick in between.

engine oil can expand by close to 10% over normal operating range.

Wipe the dipstick off and then re-check. You should find an even oil level, unless the car is parked on a slant...
