W210 Leaking Diesel

I have a 1997 W210 E300D. I noticed smoke coming from under the hood the other day so I removed the crossover tube, took off the cover and looked at the injectors. There was a pool of diesel around each injector. I couldn't tell if it was from a leaking fuel line or injector. Has anyone else seen this before. How do I remove the injectors to take a look?
Thanks!

Hi, my car had the same trouble. It was the injector return lines. If yours look moist, they're probably the culprit. I bought a 4' section of viton line from www.fryerpower.com to replace them.

First off welcome aboard.

Second always do a search on what you are interested in finding out more about.

Third search on leaking fuel return lines and/or replacing fuel return lines in diesel discussion. I always use oem material when I replace them.

good luck

My mechanic replace the return lines with a rubber polyplastic tube. That tubing is tougher than nails, wont crumple or break. It fixed the problem.

Mine has a habit of poking a hole in the plug in the #6 injector. Might want to check that too. I replaced all my returns with viton also. No need to remove the injectors.

This type of leak can have up to 3 sources:

- injector return hoses
- injector line nuts
- the middle of the injector where the two halves screw into each other

Before removing the injectors (if you decide to do so) suck all the injector wells dry so you don't have all this dirty fuel leak into your combustion chambers. You'll need a special socket, available at a dealer or online, to remove the injectors.

I had a bit of a variant. The plug on the last cylinder return line was dripping only under high throttle. The plug line was touching the injector lines and fuel was running down the supply lines and leaving the injectors wet. It took a little while to track that one down.

Yeah, it's hard to keep the injector wells totally dry. I have some microscopic leaks around like half of my injectors that I'm trying to nail down, but they're so minor that I might just have to live with them. I've especially had trouble with some of the injector line nuts.
