Question 96 Oil filter question

I'm changing the oil myself for the first time on a 96 E300.How do you remove the filter from the cap, does it just pull apart or do I need to take that plastic arrow thing off first?

Hi, I just wrap a paper towel around the filter, grab hold of it, wiggle/twist and pull. Be carefull as it can come loose suddenly and sling oil all over...

Grasp the lid and bang the bottom of the star shaped shaft on something firm once or twice and it will pop off. Is just pressed on hand tight.

Leave the "arrow thing" on. Do a combination of what both say. Wrap a paper towel around the filter element and hold firmly, then whack the "arrow thing" lightly on the table. If it doesn't come out, whack a bit harder.

Same as what has been said.....except I put a small plastic grocery bag over the filter and pull it off right into the bag. Less mess......

I have also tried prying the filter off but the cardboard tends to collapse. Pulling/banging does seem to be best. It certainly feels like the cap will break before letting go of the filter.
