92' 300d turbo w/ bad engine

The car: 1992 300d turbo 2.5 w/160k

The problem: Runs very rough and noisy. Lots of white smoke.

Does anyone know what this means? Is this coolant mixing w/ oil?

Thanks!

Joe

here are a few things you could check. Look at the oil dipstick to see if it has any water in it(youll see water bubbles), if yes it means that water/antifreeze is getting into your oil, most likely from a blown head gasket. Next look to see if there is oil in your coolant, again, if yes, most likely a blown headgasket. I've heard of a vacuum pump diaphram causing similar problems but it was on an older 300D(w123) also, has the engine over-heated recently? have you over-revved it? was it a sudden problem or a gradual problem. Your engine could very well just be worn out, but i doubt it IF, and only IF you have taken care of it well. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will jump in here, but i'm just trying to get your gears turning.(which is helpfull if their always rusty like mine )

I second rg's post: head gasket. The syptoms you describe are identical to the symptoms I had which led to the replacement of the head gasket in my OM60x engine last Winter. Best of luck.

Thanks guys! This car is on E-bay right now. It looks very nice though. I thought about bidding but I just wanted a few opinions first.

Here it is-

Joe:

Most likely a blown head gasket, but the heads crack on these engines rather easily if badly overheated, and white smoke usually means coolant in the combustion chambers. If the compression is gone, it will smoke white on startup, but go black when it warms up.

New (rebuilt) engine is in the $7000 range, total motor overhaul is about $5000 plus labor at my local shop -- seven hours R&R, 50 hours overhaul time (mine is a six).

I'm going to be ripping into my 87 300D with a similar problem (rough running, oil in the coolant, and excess coolant reservior pressure) -- at least a head gasket, probably head, maybe sleeves, etc. I will be doing the work myself, so shouldn't be out too much, but if you bite, don't pay more than 3 or 4 thousand.

Car on Ebay

Joe,

Your talking about the car on EBay right? It appears after speaking with the seller that it overheated and blew a head gasket. I say this knowing that it has an aluminum head which is probably junk at this point. Assuming the rings are also not cracked, you looking at a min of replacing the head. I would think a good junkyard head is easily $1000 which you must rebuild.

I think for about $2K-2.5K you could get it up and running assuming the block has not be damaged. This is assuming the groups DIYer attitude about doing work like this to save money and ensure the job get done right.

Nice car... I considered it... then consider the risk...

I saw the car too and was going to kid you to "give up, I'm going to outbid you no matter what..."

But the price has gone over what I'd be willing to pay for it considering the risk. A significantly overheated car may need a new head and also have cylinder & ring damage. From what I've heard, white smoke is typically water. An issue to consider is whether the oil was significantly contaminated with coolant. That might have ruined bearings.

I was going to go as high as $3K. If you are not going to go see the car, I'd at least suggest you ask them to send you pictures of all sides of the car and a close-up of the "small dent".

Good Luck to whoever buys.....

Seems like a good deal at that price if you can fix the engine for 4K or less....and hence maybe have a better car than any other 300D with 160K...........I had a 1992 just like this one that I traded in 1997 with 210K miles and I got 10K for it...and that was wholesale............interior looks great though

I just had to add that I may be selling my 300D 2.5, after I put on the vacuum pump. I may be getting a mint 1998 E 300D.
