'82 300 TD Tachometer Question

Okay, I have been searching around for a fix for my broken tachometer. I seem to find quite a few posts for '85 300's but, I haven't as of yet been able to locate any info about the '82 300's Tachometers. Mine works sometimes, but most of the time it doesn't work. What do I need to check? Does the '82 have an OVP relay?

You haven't been able to find info on the tach amp????????????
Tsk, tsk......
Maybe if you search "cigarette butt".

BTW, Techguy512 [Bob] has developed a replacement tach amp. Slicker than snot on a glass doorknob.........

'85 tachs are different from '82's.
Follow JimmL's advice.

do you have a small round black cylinder bolted to the drivers side front wheel well under the hood? Should unscrew then unplug. That will be the tach amp. Good for multiple cracked connections inside.

it could also be the pickup. before you mess with the tach amp, raise up the front of the car. on the driver side of the crank pully there is a little black cylinder pointed toward the crank pulley. this is your pickup. rotate the motor with a socket to get the pin in the crank balancer lined up with the pickup, then bend the bracket so that the pickup is 1/16 away from the pin. make sure they do not touch or it will ruin the pickup and they are a bear to change. if your tach is intermittent then this may fix it, if not then get the electronic tach amp replacement from the guy here on the forum. it is nice and has its own diag step on startup.

^^ If you think that's the problem, you may want to spray degreaser on the pick up first.
Usually tho, it's the amp failing.
